Hose wrapped up

Post by Mr Snuffy » Fri Feb 26, 2016 5:54 am

Just spent my first night with my CPAP . It went pretty good I guess for my first night except for waking up several times because of RLS and my hose.

The several times that I woke up, I had the hose wrapped around my arm, under me and around my shoulder, around my neck or rolled in a ball in front of my face because of the way I toss and turn due to the RLS. I worry I am going to pull my machine off the table. I had the hose above my head and used the pillow to hold it against the head board to start with.

How do you guys keep your hoses from wrapping up in a ball or around you?

Google (or do a search right here in the forum) "Hose Buddy". You can also rig something going over the headboard (if you have one) or that hooks onto the wall loosely, to accommodate your movements. Others have even done a 'sky hook' with extra hose length.

The Hose Buddy was the best cpap investment I've made. Like you, I ended up ripping up a hose one night. Fighting the hose all night is aggravating. Do a search here for "hose hanger". I bought mine, but a lot of forum members have rigged up their own.

I have this, bought cause it was super cheap and I wasn't sure that a hose holder would work for me, but it's been great. http://www.amazon.com/North-American-He ... 651-Holder

this is what I use to hold my hose up above my head. the base sits between the mattress and frame, and the height is adjustable, and it swivels (well, I'm twisting the whole thing, but same difference)

I think you do need something with a little give so it doesn't pull on your mask when you move or you will increase leaks. There are regular hose holders that pack and travel easily, or you can make up one with something that has give like a bungee, ponytail holder, or large rubber band.

I leave enough hose on "my" side that there's plenty of give, I can roll over and move around a bit without pulling on the hose. It certainly wouldn't work if there were any tension in the hose.

Gosh, are you treating the RLS? No use to suffer so badly. Talk to your sleep doc about treatment.

You should also have your serum ferritin level checked. For people with RLS, the level should be a minimum around 100.

I had a ferritin test done by my sleep doctor for my rls. My ferritin level was a 6. My doctor told me to start taking iron and vitamin C twice a day. The vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron.

I think a hose buddy might help you. I know I have pulled my cpap off my bed side stand, I wish they would come up with a suction cup type thing to secure it. Anyways when I was in school we had a product by 3M I believe, it was this bendable think, but firm plastic that was Velcro. I used this to Velcro it to my bed side table, this stuff really sticks, the only problem is if you are traveling, you will need to remove the Velcro on the machine as it will slide around, and once it is on there, it is really on there.

Had all the blood test and all came back normal. I had a PLM index of 186 when I had my sleep study done 2 weeks ago. >5 is indicator.

Called Neurologist and she is going to start me on meds for it. I always knew I turned and rolled but somehow I kept my mask on last night even though I was tangled up in my hose.

I travel for work so anything I use has to be portable. I found these at hardware store
http://www.amazon.com/Command-Decorativ ... rips+strap
and think I will give them a try tonight tying off to headstand. I will be able to use in hotels and just have to buy extra strips.

Thx

I also travel for week, and recently purchased one of these: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss? ... ose+Holder.

It folds up reasonably small, goes together like bungeed tent poles in a few seconds, and fits between the mattress and box spring. The hose holder is attached to the bungee cord so it will give a little if you are moving around in your sleep.

Your solution for home does not have to be the same as for travel.

Another thing to do if you toss and turn a lot is to have somebody knit/crochet a soft cosy for the short hose. That way you won't be bothered if it is on your face.

You need to look at the value for serum ferritin on your lab results. For a person with RLS, the level should be > 75 µg/l. For a person without RLS, the value should be >22.

Many doctors don't know about the higher level for RLS patients. Check it yourself.

I will have to look into one of these if my hook does not work. Will let you know in day or 2
