OT: Scalia and sleep apnea

Post by robysue » Wed Feb 24, 2016 3:09 pm

It's been a long, long time since I've been around here. (Life interferes sometimes and it's been a very hectic last 12-18 months.)

But I saw this on the Washington Post site today and thought of all my friends here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to- ... ge%2Fstory
It's the first confirmation I've seen that Scalia owned a CPAP. And was not using it the night he died.

*sigh*
Much as I disliked the man as a Supreme Court Justice, I feel sorry for him. And I can't help but wonder if his untreated apnea did kill him that night.

I remember some of your life challenges and wanted to say that it is good to see your name here again. Thanks for the link and reminder.

Scalia and sleep apnea

Post by Sheffey » Wed Feb 24, 2016 4:10 pm

I suspected this from the minute I heard of his death in the bed. Thanks for posting.

BTW, this definitely should not be marked "OT".

Sleep apnea was my first thought also. He had too many ailments to be ignored. I didn't like his politics either... but it's sad. No one can say with certainty that he wouldn't have passed anyway, just maybe not that night had he been using his machine.

Most of the judges I have met seem to be pretty darn stubborn.
It kind of fits. Sad, for his family, as it generally is.

My first thought also...
The way his head was up on 3 pillows...seems like he decided to pass on CPAP that night. Bad decision....
I would trust pillows only when my power is out.

I agree with you on both counts;

I wondered about this, as it appears many have but nobody brought it up until you found the article mentioning Cpap; glad you found it.

I also can't stand him as a justice, what kind of kook would think the Constitution should be interpreted in the strict sense of what those who wrote it intended or someone silly enough to think justices should not legislate from the bench; so old fashioned and out of touch. We need justices who can change the Constitution not interpret it.

That's not the job of a justice. ...they interpret the Constitution. The Legislature makes changes.

I'm sorry there haven't been eight more like him on the SCOTUS.
In the days following his death, there was so much information about him that the spectrum of ideologies should have appreciated more. He was actually very close with those on the court who were ideologically polar opposites to him.

He was close friends with my favorite justice, The Notorious RBG.

10 percent of recent college graduates think Judge Judy sits on the Supreme Court. Sigh.

I know. And Sonia Sotomayor. He and RBG went to the opera together. And, he and Sotomayor went shooting and hunting together.

There are lots of things we never hear about those folks until they're gone.
(or, unless you're in the social circles they belong to)
