Possible suffocation... sort of.

Post by gytrdun » Tue Feb 02, 2016 11:58 am

Hello, newbie here, as they say "Long time lurker, first time poster". I've had my cpap for about 6 months and it's been awesome. The first day home after my sleep study I took three naps, which my wife still finds amusing, as I had never taken naps before. I always thought they were useless. Within a week, I was off sleeping pills, off heart burn meds, and they are weening me off of blood pressure meds. Yay! I'm sleeping well, and my numbers seem fine, however, in the morning, sometimes I feel like I'm not getting enough air. I'm starting to take the mask off in my sleep, I think because of this. When I'm waking up in the morning, laying in bed, it almost feels as if I could breath better if I take the mask off. It almost feels like I'm suffocating slightly. I can clearly breathe better with it off in the awake/half awake state. This may be by design, but I wanted to run it by you folks.

As a side note, I've gotten tons of great ideas from this site, love the community! Thanks in advance.

Welcome, and congratulations on your good progress. Most of us get use to the pressure after a while and it seems like it's not giving us as much pressure. You can see your pressure is about 9 -10 most of the time. Since your AHI is low what I would try is to increase your EPR from 1 to 2 or 3 and see if this feels like more natural breathing. Also raise your ramp up to 6 or 7 just in case this contributes to the feeling when you put the mask back on.

Excellent! Thanks for your response. Now to go figure out how to actually do that, I saw the post, just need to find it. Thanks again.

If you don't have your clinical manual here it is. https://sleep.tnet.com/home/files/resme ... -guide.pdf

EPR was set to Off. I changed it to 1
Ramp Rate is set to 5. I can only adjust it by 5 minute increments, so I just left it for now.

Thanks again!

I was talking about changing ramp pressure to 6 0r 7. You can change both ramp pressure and time.

Okay, now I'm really confused! I can't change ANYTHING on my machine! If I have any problems, it has to be done by my doctor! How do you guys change your own machine settings?

You haven't shown your machine, but it must be one of the S9 models...You can change whatever you want...you just need the "secret sauce". If it's an Autoset or Elite, you can use this. http://osahelp.com/clinician-manuals/S9 ... al-eng.pdf

the same way your doctor does, with the same manual.
