Nose with MAJOR attitude: Pillows or nasal. Doesn't Matter

Post by Starlette » Sun Jan 31, 2016 7:43 pm

Hi everyone,

Whether it be nasal or pillow masks. Nose can't handle either. Even as I type this, nose is having issues. Little tolerance for having something on top of it.
Pillows: The air feels cold and dry.

What do I do?

Don't know if you've tried turning up your heated hose temperature and humidifier? That would seem to make the air delivered more humid and warmer?

Or have you already done that?

Just curious...

Starlette - as I saw your comment in another post about FFM's, there is no one mask that is perfect for everyone. I have been on an ASV machine since August and have tried 5 masks including a "hybrid" - recently found a mask that seems to work for me so far.

Have you used Elan before?
I would have suggested Wisp, but it's already in your profile.
Which frame do you have on the Wisp?
I found the silicone holds the cushion up enough to keep pressure on my nose much lighter.
I just hate the fabric frame. It lets the cushion slide down much harder on and around my nose.

Get a heated humidifer on your CPAP if you dont already have one and CRANK IT UP TO THE MAX. This is the middle of winter, the air is cold and dry and its not normal to be driving high pressure, cold dry air up your nose. The heated humidifier fixes that, but you have to toy around with it, I just crank mine up in the winter and leave it up.

Make sure you get a cover for your hose as the heated humidifer will cause major rainout in your hose and wake you up without a hose cover. Resmed makes a good one, zip on zip off its easy and its cheap.

Humidifier...CRANK THAT SUCKER UP TO THE MAX IN THE WINTER
Id be dead by now if I didn't use my CPAP gear every night.

I use nasal pillows and lube my nose with petroleum jelly . Solves a lot of issues -- comfort and sealing. I can't use them dry.

Petroleum jelly can degrade/damage the plastic that the pillows are made of. What is recommended here is Lansinoh which is designed to soothe the nipples of nursing mothers, so you know it's safe and gentle. Many people here swear by it, but I have never needed it.

It's also a #1 best seller on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Lansinoh-Lanolin- ... B005MI648C It should also be available at most drug stores.

@ ChunkyFrog Please rephrase: Which frame do you have on the Wisp?

Cpap.com calls it the "clear" frame. It is silicone or clear plastic, and clings to my face;
unlike either side of the reversible fabric frame.

I bought one mask with the fabric frame (from someone here).
I hated the frame. Pressure on my face was much heavier than with the clear frame.
Some people might not like the soft plastic sticking to your cheeks, but it was OK with me.

If you decide to continue/try new nasal pillows I would suggest a barrel cozy. PadaCheek makes them. padacheek.com. Really helps with the chapped areas I was having under my nostrils and I feel like the pillows stay in place better and I am having less leaks.
