Is this product okay to put in my cpap humidifier ?

Post by BlizzardUK » Sat Jan 23, 2016 6:22 pm

I have been using spring water thus far but the limescale build up has been bad, and I need to scrape it each week. I thought I would turn to distilled water, but I can't find it in any shops here in the UK, so instead of making my own the long way I looked online and found some from Amazon. I wasn't sure whether to go for Deionized, Demineralized, or just Distilled. No big shock but the one I wanted was the most expensive, the distilled. Are all 3 types safe to use ?

I bought the distilled water but do I need to check it is fit for human use ? It seems to be in German on the label.

Here is what I bought : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BVKB2CI

I hope that is for a case of 24 gallons
and I am sure even German distilled water is fit for human consumption
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Yes, its fit for human use.

I think the line may be a little blurry between delionized and demineralized. They are also fit for human use.

(edit : wrote the below before I saw hosecrusher's reply, thanks for that)

Only 5 litres, very expensive for water, can't get it in the shops here. I couldn't believe the amount of limescale my bottled water would leave after just 2 nights, difficult to get in to all the nooks and crannies to clean it fully.

I just wasn't sure if some distilled water was not fit for human use. It says what it can be used for on the front of the tub, but in my limited German or Dutch (whatever it is) knowledge I can't see "human consumption".

This is partly why I am confused about the human consumption thing, this advert for distilled water says it can't be consumed : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CLASSIKOOL-PU ... 0771744685

demineralized and deionized are close enough to the same thing for your purposes, and should be fine, distilled water has a bit less minerals/ions, but is probably not worth the cost difference.

alternatively, you can get another tub, use tap water, alternate between them, and soak one with a bit of vinegar while using the other. or, do what I do and just quit using the humidifier... if your nose can adjust.

have you tried tap water? it might have less crap in it than the bottled stuff does.

The 'limescale' in both bottled and spring water is mostly calcium carbonate and calcium bicarbonate with a little magnesium bicarbonate as well, and the amount varies by area.

Even the water from the 'softest' water areas in the UK can have as much as 100mg per litre of calcium bicarb in it, while the amount of magnesium bicarb in UK-drawn spring water can be anything from 5mg to 50mg per litre.

In other words, a lot of variation.

You might try working your way through the spring waters from various UK regions.

If it's any help to you, the supermarket chain Sainsbury's own brand of spring water is from near where I grew up, in Scotland, and has quite a low amount of carbonates and bicarbonates in it. There is a slight deposit after a few weeks - but it's easily taken care of with a solution of spirit vinegar.

5 kg is not a heckuva lot of water.
Not even enough to flush a real toilet.

Of course, you could always try the water-jug-plus-filter-cartridge method from the German company, Brita, which is widely available in the UK.

And in recent years, the drug-store chain Boots, and the supermarket chain Tesco's have both been selling their own brand of jug-plus-cartridge-filter. Indeed, Tesco's has recently introduced what they call their 'second generation filter jug'.

All three brands remove limescale.

Is distilled water really not available locally? You might find it for us in steam irons? Maybe you could look into a home distiller. They are expensive, but over the long run it would probably be worth it at those prices.

that's a good idea, I remember seeing a rather long discussion on brita effectively demineralizing water over on a keurig forum, where people were talking about using brita filtered water to cut down on the amount of maintenance and descaling they had to do on their coffee robots...

I guess you're right, a quick Google did not find much.

I was in the UK a couple of months ago. It surprised me that I couldn't get distilled water anywhere. The pharmacy wanted about 10 pounds a liter. I would recommend buying a water distiller and making your own.
