Whistling on exhale

Post by Sleepy Bubba » Sat Jan 23, 2016 10:49 am

Hello, I have had my CPAP for over a year now, and have had great success. I have not had to adjust the mask at all, once I got it where I liked it, and have not had any problems. However, in the last couple of weeks, I have been awakened at night, but a Whistling sound when I exhale. I breathe in and out fine, but the air makes a whistle. The ONLY adjustment I have made to my setup is to increase the humidity setting on my machine, as winter was making me a bit drier. Certainly nothing drastic. Any clues?

Thanks

Often times condensation in the tube causes new noises. Do you have the heated tube?

If you've removed the humidifier tank or detached any part of it for any reason, are you completely sure it went back together the same way it was originally?

Could your hose have a hole in it?

It could be coming from your nose if you are a little bit stuffed up. To diagnose, you could try an over-the-counter nasal spray right before bed one night after doing a sinus rinse an hour earlier. This would keep your nose unstuffed most of the night and let you see if there is a difference. I am only recommending the spray for a single night to figure this out. It is not a long tern solution.

If you are talking about Afrin and similar products, you need to be careful. Afrin's active ingredient is oxymetazoline, which is a selective alpha-1 agonist and partial alpha-2 agonist. A common side effect is insomnia.

One shot in each nostril in the evening, and I won't sleep well the entire night.

I used the NeilMed formulation. It didn't keep me awake. I think for most people, the nasal sprays don't get far enough into the bloodstream to cause insomnia. It's why I use the spray instead of a pill when I have a cold.

You should have specified a saline spray. NeilMed only makes saline types of rinses and sprays. These will not cause insomnia.

The one used has actual medicine similar to the others. Will post when I get back home and read it.

It is sinufrin as far as I know it has the same active ingredient as Afrin. Again side effects are very rare because of the usually low absorption.
It is important with any nasal medication that you not inhale it. Jus squirt it at the side of your nostril.

I use this same mask and really like it. I did have a problem after washing and changing the filter where the filter was cattywhompus (technical term for not fitted properly) I had some weird noises that did not return when I replaced the filter again correctly. This was the filter right at the tip of your nose on the mask.

Hope you find the issue if this doesn't help!

Kind regards,
GB

Mines been doing that too, I have decided it's just happy to be with me at night. It's not loud, I found it annoying, now it doesn't bother me at all he just kind of singing along with me at night. Jim

Same for me. If I use it, it's only in the morning so it will wear off by bedtime.

I do believe NeilMed makes a product with the same active ingredient as Afrin. But NeilMed is more well known for saline sprays.

I've had the same problem and have found that it's from condensation in the mask itself. The warm air comes into my full-face mask and because the mask is cooler because the room is cooler, the humidity condenses. It then gets into the exhalation holes in the mask and makes a noise, especially when I breath in and the mask pressure is higher. I've found wiping out the inside of the mask if I wake up in the middle of the night helps a lot.
