AHI or SPO2

Post by achiever » Fri Jan 01, 2016 9:03 am

Happy New Year to all.

It might be a dumb query but which is the more important of these two sleep apnea parameters to monitor: AHI or SPO2?

Both important, but 02 levels affect your heart, lungs and brain. Generally the more times you stop breathing the more problems with 02 levels....

what LSAT said...

you can have terribly crap, unrestful sleep due to fighting to breath all night, and thus have a bad AHI, and still have adequate SpO2, AND
you can have smooth, no apnea sleep, and still not get enough oxygen, thus having low SpO2.

got a friend using an oxygen concentrator, even though with his ASV, his AHI is often 0.0, rarely does it hit as high as 1.0, but he still needs supplemental oxygen at night.

On my 3rd sleep study the doctor suggested possible oxygen so I have appt with pulmonologist 1/5 to discuss further.

That is like asking which is more important, fuel in your tank or coolant in your radiator? You need both for your car to get you where you are going.
What you monitor on a regular basis depends on where you have issues.
If your SPO2 has been checked overnight a few times and has never been below 93 you may not need to own your own monitor. If your 30 day average AHI on the screen of your PAP has never been above 1.0 then an occasional spot check may be all you need.
Many of us are not that lucky and check our numbers regularly and tweek our settings looking for that illusive perfection.
