New, please forgive question

Post by mrssned50 » Thu Dec 31, 2015 11:32 pm

Hello! I am asking this question here because my sleep doc and CPAP distributor are all off until Monday the 4th due to the holiday. Please forgive my not understanding this on my own, but I am distressed and don't know where else to turn for now. I have a Resmed Autosense 10. Beautiful machine and I love it. I have been using it a month. I have chronic sleep apnea and have successfully been treated now for 10-years with another machine. It was time for an upgrade and hence, the new one I currently have ( plus a new sleep study in April). It is wireless and I can get my entire report online, but haven't been able to today due to a possible glitch in the software. I also get quite a detailed sleep report on the machine itself and this is where my question comes in.
My usual events per hour are 1.0-1-9. My AhI is low as well. I have a good mask fit with 5L/min leak. My pressure is set at 10 with no ramping, which I like.

This morning, however this is what it read:

Usage Hours: 0.22 (??? I slept 7 hours)

Events per hour: 8.1 !!! This freaked me out!

AHI: 1.5

Total AI: 1.4

Central AI: 0.4

I wonder if I might have turned my machine off to sneeze and then turned it back on and stayed awake then only sleeping for 22 minutes and checked my cell for messages with the mask on and pulled it away here and there to swallow, etc., therefore giving me this odd reading? I tried to find this in the manual with no luck. I also wonder if the machine resets itself if you turn it off and then on again and maybe that's why I got this funky but distressful reading?

And if I didn't, does that mean I had 8 apneas an hour over a 7 hour period?? YIKES!

I am confused as to the Events Per Hour VS AHI?

Thank you for any support you can offer! Sue

I don't know the answers to all your questions, but sometimes there are glitches in every system. If you feel ok, then the numbers you got are probably all wrong. Just see what happens over a few days

If you check last night's stats after noon hour, you'll get a split reading of two lesser times as the machines generally record from noon to noon, so it's best to check before that time.

And for heaven's sake, this IS a Cpap/Osa forum set up to help with all things Cpap... don't ever feel you can't ask even what seem like the dumbest (and yours was far from that) questions at any time. We're all just a bunch of patients ourselves trying to get answers and help others, and if you spend any time reading some of the postings you'd not only blush but likely run screaming at some point (we can get into some awful messes ). Please don't apologize for anything and do come back with whatever issues you'd like. And Happy New year!

First, I agree with Julie. We help each other. No bad questions here. Only unasked ones.

I was thinking the same thing, palerider. Having done shift work for a while, I was finding the same thing. (there REALLY needs to be a setting for "day start" on these things!)

0.22 hours is 13 minutes. Not 22. Neither of which is helpful to the OP.

AHI is the Apnea and Hypopnea Index (per hour). These are only two (2) of the events reported by your AirSense 10. The others include large leaks (LL) and unclassified apnea (UA) caused by other obstructions. Seeing your data might help. Regardless, it seems that the events per hour being significantly higher than your AHI indicates that the LL and UA are your issues. And likely to lead to helping you answer your own question.

It's a learning curve to be sure. And I'm new to the AirSense 10, so back here after a few years myself.

I'm not familiar with this machine and my experience may be totally irrelevant but an example from my PR machine - I've had a couple of nights where I started my machine and then had to stop it within 15 minutes. My machine has wifi and uploads my data to DreamMapper but it uploads at odd times. It has frequently done uploads while my machine is in use so it is only reporting the 15 minutes for the night until it catches up with the rest of the data, sometimes 2 days later!

in sleepyhead, you can tell it to adjust the split time, nobody should be paying that much attention to what's on the front displays, too little data to be useful.

from a single ahi, you can't tell if you had a mostly great night with a few periods of something bad, or a generally crappy all night... and certainly can't do anything to make it better, other than just blindly guessing. ya needs the details that SleepyHead gives ya. (yes, I'm biased, my name is in the credits of folks that helped out)
