Newbie fretting about compliance.

Post by CharmingFrock » Thu Dec 24, 2015 5:53 pm

I got my machine on December 4th just as I was starting to get the flu, which took a good 5 days before I was no longer feverish and congested. Since then I am have been plugging away and am up to an average of 3.5 hours a night but it is totally inconsistent. I know I am supposed to get at least 4 hours a night but one night will be 3 hours and the next 7 hours, then 2.5 hours...et cetera. During a normal month, I can easily throw in an extra nap or wake up, put the mask back on, and then sleep another hour or so, but Christmas time is just crazy. No sleeping longer or taking naps for me. I think I am doing better and am trying to push up my time, but I getting panicked about Tricare (my insurance company) swooping down and taking the CPAP because I have already have 11 days of not getting 4 hours in.

I normally don't advocate cheating on compliance, but I know often problems do occur . You can sit with the mask on and machine running while watching TV. The system doesn't know if you are asleep or not. The insurance company just wants to see that the machine is being used the required number of hours each day. Good Luck.

You typically have 90 days to get your act together. Also your doctor can help you get more time if you have a lot of problems.
Do as suggested and use it to watch tv. It will help you adjust to wearing it and gives your mind the idea that this thing on your face is totally safe.

It will help if you add your equipment in the control panel so people know what you are using.

Also give us a clear description of the problems you are having so we can help with that too - though it may take a day or two right now.

Are you noncompliant because you're not going to bed? Or because you're sleeping without the machine? If sleeping without the machine, why are you doing that?

Tri-Care usually goes by Medicare compliance, after the patient starts CPAP treatment at home there has to be documentation of patient compliance. This is done after 31 days but before 90 days of usage. They must have a download of the CPAP usage and a face to face re-evaluation with their physician. Their physician must document that the patients symptoms have improved. Adherence to CPAP is defined as usage greater or equal to 4 hours per night on 70% of nights during a consecutive 30 days anytime during the first 3 months of initial usage.
