Using CPAP While Sick

Post by highstick99 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 7:47 pm

Well, I made it a little over two months with excellent results, but picked up a cold(probably sinus infection) a couple of days ago...Made it ok, the first night, but last night was "the beast from hell"...couldn't breath through the nose at all and mouth breathing with the full face mask was out because my throat was really sore. 31 minutes last night and I've been averaging 7 hours or better. Not looking forward tonight either.

Any magic suggestions? I'm really ticked off because I was 100% compliant since Oct 5. I know there will be set backs, but I've felt horrible all day long from lack of sleep and this crud.

Try a nasal rinse like NeilMed from your pharmacy. It works great. Afterward try raising your humidity. Use the FF Mask.

I use a FF exclusively, and when I have a cold I drink Sleepy Time Tea or Gypsy Cold Care Tea with a spoonful of honey in it before bed. I use cough drops throughout the day and evening even if I don't have a cough because they soothe the throat. I may not sleep as well as I normally do, but at least I get through the majority of the night with the mask. Sleepy Time Tea is available at my grocery store, the Gypsy tea at the Food Co-op. I also raise my humidity.

For the first months, I always kept an "arsenal" on my nightstand........Vicks Nyquil, cough drops, nasal inhaler, etc.
About two weeks after I started therapy, I developed a cough so bad that I couldn't keep my mask on, so I discontinued therapy for about 10 nights until I could manage to keep it on again. Other than that period, I've been compliant and have used items from my "arsenal" to deal with whatever came my way.......which fortunately hasn't been much or often. In fact, I think it's been at least 5 or 6 years since I've had a cold or the flu.
I've never adjusted my humidity because I've always used cool "passover" and that has kept my airways open. Warm, humid air just ain't my cup of tea.

Haven't missed a nights treatment in the 10 years I've used XPAP, if I'm sick why would I want to be sicker.... Jim

Flonase (it's OTC now in the US) and Breathe Right strips usually do the trick for me, plus pillows to prop me up.
