I picked up BiPap from Apria (different mask than expected)

Post by Enchanter » Tue Nov 10, 2015 5:24 pm

I went there today and the mask they gave me was a Nasal Mask. They said that it was DEFAULT, and no specific mask was specified, so they said it would do. As far as I know, I used a full faced mask in the study. However, through my experience, I have not tolerated the masks well. So I don't know if I should have done this, but I accepted it because they said I have 30 days to try it out. I figured that since I haven't been able to sleep with full faced masks, maybe this one would be comfortable. Now I believe I'm a mouth breather, but that is just my belief. If I'm a mouth breather in the day, does that mean I'm a mouth breather at night?

I could have just told them to give the Full faced, but I'm hoping this is a blessing in disguise. I would love to be able to use a mask without one covering my whole face. I don't know if it's going to work though, but at this point I guess I gotta try. Hope I am making the right decision. Apria finally came though. I don't know if it's the right mask, but I don't know if it's not the right mask. Hoping it's a blessing in disguise.

Use the mask for a few weeks and see how it goes. If it works out for you, great. If not, return it and insist on trying another one, perhaps not a full face mask. A suggestion would be the Airfit P10 or the Dreamwear. You can google both to see what they look like, and also do a search here. There is a thread on the Dreamwear that I believe is still on the first page. Glad to hear you got a machine. Which one did you get -- and the name of the mask you got today would be helpful. Getting Sleepyhead would be a good idea also. Check the top of the first page -- Pugsy's helpful hints on Sleepyhead-- or something like that. Best of luck to you! Also, what Cardsfan said...

Wow, that's great! Lots of features... have you read the manual and have you got your script to help you with settings, or were settings done by the DME?

Do you mean it's set only in Cpap mode rather than Apap (which would have two settings)?

I don't know exactly how it works or why it's a bipap vs a cpap. But I'm watching the dvd right now. Will let u know.

It's 6 am right now. I haven't got any sleep. I've been wearing the nasal mask. I think it is more comfortable than the full face mask. However, the result is the same. I can't sleep. I know it's only been one day, but this is a problem and has been for me for years and years. I don't think it's going to get any better. Is it time that I go to my doctor and try to get treatment for that? I don't think any behavior changes will help me sleep better because it's beyond my control. It's been too many years where I can't sleep when I want. I already went to the doctor for sleep apnea, but I've come to terms that I have chronic insomnia as well. However, if it's the sleep apnea causing my insomnia, then in theory the bipap would help my insomnia. But I can't sleep, and I've never tolerated any mask well.

Enchanter....... how many hours do you typically sleep in a 24 hour period?

5 to 8 maybe? It's 8 am and I am wide awake. No sleep. Haven't had any success with sleeping in any cpap or bipap mask.

Actually, 5-8/24 isn't a bad ratio, especially if you're on Cpap... are you concerned because you 'think' you should be sleeping more hours (according to someone else's schedule), or because you feel like crap and think it's because you're not getting enough sleep?
