Cpap and allergies new person

Post by thexfiles » Sat Nov 07, 2015 5:30 pm

SO I just came to the realization that I am not cleaning my cpap machine properly. I have also been using the water from the faucet. After reading this forum people are saying use distilled water.

I have a resmed airsense 10 autoset

My water chamber seems to have gotten a decent amount of rust. Now I am using vinegar and soaking it to help get rid of it and clean it.

I use a full mask. It works for me because all the other masks because I still keep my mouth open. But for the past few weeks. It seems as if I wake up constantly because it gets loud.

I have also come to realize that I am missing my filter and the cover for the filter. I assume this is very important. do you guys have any suggestions?

Lastly I am allergic to dust and I can't stop coughing. I got my inhaler out but now with the apnea I am just miserable.

Google Filter cover for Airsense 10 cpap. You can order a replacement filter cover for about $10 online.

do you have any suggestions on legitimate websites to order? I found a couple sites but then some bad press has me worried.

also should I avoid using my cpap machine if I don't have a filter?

Our host cpap.com if you are in the USA.

The question is why didn't your machine come with filters?

I checked with our host, and did not see that part listed.
I will say I saw it on http://www.directhomemedical.com. (I hope this isn't against the forum rules) I have ordered a part for my machine from them in the past with good service. Direct Home Medical.

In the search bar, type in Filter cover for airsense 10 cpap

i ordered from them. Thank you.

Should I continue to use my mask or should I wait till it arrives? I ordered 10 hypnofilters as well for 16 bucks. Hopefully that will make me feel better because I have been feeling awful for the last week

Use your system. The air coming in is the same room air you breathe during the day.
With the filters in place, the air quality will be better but there is no need to wait.

You should continue to use your machine - don't wait for the filters! You're just breathing the same air in your dwelling that you breathe when you are not using the machine.

Regarding the water, the reason why people use distilled water is so that they don't have to scrub out their water tanks but, health-wise, it's perfectly alright to use tap water. You only breathe the water vapor - all the minerals are left behind.

Distilled water is only 88 cents at Walmart for a gallon jug. It's up to you whether you want o use distilled or tap and need to clean your tank.

Aren't the filters more to keep dust out of the machine than for the air you're breathing? As was said already, you're just breathing in room air. I thought the filters were just to help keep the machine clean inside.

Thank you guys for the wisdom.

that must explain why my allergies got so bad.

I had to go get a new inhaler I couldn't stop coughing. I still have it but hopefully it won't turn into a full blown bronchitis. I like the air chamber but I think I might try and get the piece that makes it so that you no longer need the water chamber and it is just the air itself. I saw it on the cpap website.

My issue with that is just how dry my mouth gets. I wake up sometimes and I feel like I am in desperate need of water. Would you guys have any suggestions to resolve this? What if I just drank a a litter or two before bed. Wouldn't that make a big difference?

If you take the humidifier off your machine, the dry mouth is only going to get worse. You might just need to adjust the humidifier setting - if you've got it set high, try turning it down a notch or two, and vice versa. I had terrible congestion the first couple of nights on my machine, and found I was actually more comfortable when I turned the humidifier up.

As for drinking a liter or two of water before bed...if I did that I'd be up every 5 minutes all night, running to the bathroom.

This year's allergy season is very bad, and you might just have to wait til it's over to get relief... in other words the problem may have no†hing much to do with your machine or filters (and yes, the filters are largely there to keep dust, etc. out of the machine). The dryness may be due more to your open mouth than anything, and you might want to try Biotene to help, but not using the humidifier won't help (and neither will drinking water before bed). Have you tried an antihistamine before bed short term til the season has passed (I would suggest not trying the non-drowsy kind to start with as those might even keep you awake, but experiment for yourself).
