For Smokers and Former Smokers

Post by Offerocker » Thu Jul 06, 2006 1:23 pm

This is for curiousity sake ONLY

This is not meant to foster judgements.

I'm curious if smokers or former smokers (due to Apnea) have cut down or stopped smoking because of their Apnea Diagnosis.

Please limit to cigarettes only.

Thanks!

When I went to my doctor to get a prescription to help stop smoking he said I would need a complete physical first.
During the checkup he told me he wanted me to go get a sleep study done.
I thought I was waking up every couple hours because my body wanted nicotin when in reality It was the apnea waking me.
Of course every time I woke I would go have a cigarette.
I have been smoke free for seven months now and on cpap for about six.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!

Sorry, I answered the poll before I read your post, so I threw your numbers off. I quit years before I was diagnosed with Apnea, although probably not before I actually had Apnea, but didn't know it. I quit due to general health concerns. I had to quit three times, once for two years, before I got it right. Now I have been smoke free for over 15 years. I will never go back. I can't even bear the thought of it or the smell of it now.

Let's see, we can't breath at night, some of us all the time, should we take up smoking to shorten our lives, even more. I think I'll pass on smoking, and playing with my revolver with more than one shell in the cylinder. Jim

I was smoking about two decades before I was diagnosed with central sleep apnea. I hope to stop one of these years, but regrettably I can't take any of the medication to assist with that. So it's a matter of me getting tough with myself. I do feel I have more strength and determination since I started the Bipap almost eight months ago, so perhaps this will become a "can do" thing for me. I certainly wouldn't agree with somebody starting to smoke, under any circumstances, but especially not if they already had obstructive breathing problems.

Early in 2000, I suffered from severe OSA and I had just quit smoking. After about three tough months on DME CPAP, I discovered a change in sleep position, along with the no smoking plan, made the OSA symptoms go away.

Even though I had to be treated in a hospital 8 times between 2003 and 2006, for A-Fib, I did not think my OSA had returned. However, my GP, not my cardio guy, sent me for a sleep study. This time the sleep study revealed only mild to moderate OSA. Upon seeing the A-Fib history my sleep doc wrote the xPAP script. I've been compliant for 6 weeks out of the the last 7 weeks.

I hope I can either reduce of stop completely 2 or 3 of my current meds.

Smoke free for 5.5 years...

Best of luck..

Jim,
I suggest that you take even that one shell out of the cylinder before playing with that revolver.

Sorry, Snoredog - I tried to make it easy, with only "YES" answers. You want a "Goofy Trick Multiple Guess Question"? Well, I can certainly come up with a few !! Like the flowchart that always directs you to go back to "Start".

I quit smoking last March because I attributed my headaches, exhaustion, fogginess, etc. to being a pack and a half a day smoker for 18 years. Whoops. It wasn't smoking - though that didn't help. It was when I felt worse after quitting, not better, that I finally went to a Dr and she said "you are going for a sleep study, you have sleep apnea" - and indeed, she was right as I found out it was OSA. Used the e-cig to quit and it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself.
