Whistling, leaking hateful little thing

Post by NoZzzz's » Tue Nov 03, 2015 4:13 am

Hello good people, I'm brand new hear but a 4 year survivor of using a cpap. I say surviving because that's all it's been, I have a Philips resperonics system one which is a good machine but currently in two pieces (note to self, never use a hammering fist blow to shut it off when I'm dissatisfied with my therapy!). I'm sure I can get back together in the morning, I hope. The mask is the problem (eson nasal), it leaks at ramp up unless I tighten the headgear to the point of notable discomfort and it leaves me with the super cool racing stripes on my face until lunch time + the defuser whistles like a lonesome ghost that wants me to stay awake and keep him company (replaced many times btw). Please tell me there's something better out there! This is obviously an important thing for me, sleep study clocked me at 56 Aeneas per hour average. Thanks in advance

Try a different mask!!! I have gone through probably 5 or 6 different styles and brands before I found the "one". Whistling during therapy is a dead give away that it is time for a change to something new. Different styles seem to handle higher pressures better than others. I am trying nasal pillows currently and I sound ready for take-off several times a night at 14 pressure. Good Luck and good sleeping

Yes, a VERY common circumstance, I auditioned a few more than six, as I recall. Keep at it and experiment a bit more; plus don't take the first mask your DME or whoever handed to you unless you are totally happy with it. BTW, nozzzz, how's your therapy going in general besides the bothersome mask Super cool racing stripes... I like that and may steal it from you in a future post!!

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I've decided that at least for me, as long as my pressure is so high, I'm not going to be leak-proof without discomfort from a very, very tight mask. Having said that, I've read on this forum, been told by a respiratory therapist and experienced for myself that my Fisher & Paykel Simplus is a very good mask for containing high pressure. The only leaking I get is very slight at the bridge of my nose (I'm very narrow there) and sometimes it doesn't leak at all. I just got a liner for it from pad-a-cheek and even though the hard data shows I actually have more leakage overall, my perception is that I have no leaks at all and I'm sleeping better. I even tried a true full face mask (picture a firefighter going into a burning building type mask) but it was too confining and HOT! I seem to have lucked out and gotten the right mask from the beginning.

Do you need/want the forehead thing?

There are some new masks out there...have you looked or tried anything lately?

This one is brand new and I have been trying it now for 3 weeks.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-dre ... -pack.html
It's actually $89 if you call cpap.com to get the discounted price. Comes with free return insurance if you don't like it you can return it within 30 days and get your money back.

This one is a nasal pillow mask that has a diffused venting system and it's pretty much silent.
It's my main mask.
See the link in my equipment profile...ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillow mask if you ever thought of trying nasal pillows.

In terms of over the nose masks without the forehead piece...
The ResMed Swift FX Nano cushion is pretty sweet. I think it still have free return insurance.
A lot of people like the Respironics Wisp.
And there is also the new ResMed AirFit N10 nasal cushion mask.
All can be seen here as well as the nasal masks with forehead thing.

You know the drill...one man's mask treasure is another man's mask trash and only you can find out by trying what it might be for you but there are some new options out there.

metsfan, I would try anything you have to offer if you think they would work (sorry for your loss btw, that was some 12th inning Sunday...ouch!) Part of my dilemma is I live and work on an Island in the NW and visiting the sleep doc is a hassle particularly because I don't have a clue as to which one might work for me and bouncing back and forth across the ferry without a clue has kept me dealing with the one I've always had.

I tried twenty masks before I found one I could wear every night.
Not everyone is as hard to fit.
There is one for you out there somewhere.

Thanks for the input corwin, that sounds like a good place to start. You wouldn't happen to know where to buy online that accepts insurance?
