Sore throat advice? Deviated septum surgery?

Post by lilasmom » Sat Oct 17, 2015 10:38 am

I'm back on my machine a Resmed S9 with a face mask. My last sleep study showed an ahi of 62. I'm claustrophobic and have a hard time keeping the mask on during the night. My pressure is set at 12. I set the temp to 60 because of my claustrophobia and I think the cool air has caused a bad sore throat today. Any advice?

Also, has anyone had a deviated septum fixed and nasal cysts removed to help their cpap usage?

Thanks

lilasmom,

Having a septoplasty didn't help my cpap usage but if you google the archives of this forum, you will find that many people did have a very positive experience. As I am sure you are well aware, choose your surgeon carefully if you decide to go this route.

Do you do nasal cleansing before bedtime? Can you breathe through you nose before you mask up for the night?
Sounds like you're mouth-breathing if you have a sore throat, so I would think that the cooler air may help during the night. But, nasal breathing and training the mouth to stay shut may help with the throat irritation......if you CAN breathe through your nose.

My first ENT recommended both fixing my deviated septum and having work done on my soft palate. Doing some research online I found that each procedure could be expected to halve my AHI. Even with both surgeries doing as expected, I would still have an AHI that would require CPAP but probably at a lower pressure. A friend of mine did both surgeries and did not need CPAP afterwards. I don't know what his AHI was before surgery. With your high AHI, you might ask how much improvement you should expect from surgery. It might help with a lower pressure.

What size neck do you have? A large neck size is correlated with sleep apnea. Deviated septum surgery might not help if you neck is large.

Do you have nasal congestion from allergies? If you do, you might want to consider allergy shots.

Good luck.

This poster asked about nasal issues and you're trying to take the conversation in an entirely different direction......that probably doesn't even apply.

Not everyone's sleep apnea originates in their throat. I personally think that more of them have their roots in the nasal passages. If you can't breathe through your nose (because of deviated septum, enlarged turbinates and/or allergies), you need to breathe through your mouth.......until the tongue falls back into the opening and blocks the airway and apneas occur.
To your credit, you did touch on the allergy issue.

I had a septoplasty and soft palate surgery several years ago. It helped my sleep apnea for a few years. The septoplasty helped my breathing period. My deviated septum was so bad, I could only breath through one nostril at a time. I would recommend the septoplasty, but not the palate surgery.
