Full Face Mask Movement - ASV / BiPap

Post by shortcake » Wed Sep 16, 2015 11:20 am

Hi all,

Lately my nose has been a bit stuffy so last night I traded my usual Wisp for my back-up full face mask (Quattro FX) to see how it went. I'm on ASV but figured BiPap users may have this issue too... I could feel the mask inflating and deflating against my face. Breathe in - the seals inflate and mask lifts up. Breathe out - mask comes back down and feels like it's smashing my cheeks! The constant movement was very uncomfortable and I just couldn't fall asleep that way (this coming from someone who is usually unconscious as soon as my head hits the pillow). I tried loosening the headgear, which helped lessen the pressure difference against my face between inhale and exhale, but then leaks would occur. Unfortunately I couldn't find a comfortable "sweet spot" where the mask was tight enough to not cause leaks, but loose enough where the cyclical pressure against my cheeks wouldn't keep me awake.

Has anyone else had this issue and found a solution besides just trying to get used to it?

Hi, shortcake. I can relate to what you're experiencing. I also use an ASV (and a FFM), and I remember (when I first got the machine) feeling like my mask was an accordion, moving back and forth with the pressure swings. I didn't have a sealing problem with the mask, though. Is there a really big difference between your IPAP and EPAP pressures?

I'm sorry I don't have a solution for it, as I just got used to it (which didn't take long). Maybe using the machine during the day, while relaxing, will help you get used to the feeling faster and you won't notice it at bedtime. If anyone has a better idea, I'm sure they'll chime in.

Good luck.

Hi!

I'm also on ASV with the Quattro FX. I found that the QFX headgear was not stable enough for me. I couldn't keep my mask in place without stretching the headgear until it went over the back of my head. Out of desperation, I tried the blue mesh headgear:

This headgear is very stable. I can adjust it and it won't move on me. My mask does not heave in and out. I love it and have been using it for about a year now.

I suggest if you can't get the Quattro FX to work then try the AirFit F10 FFM. The sidewalls of the F10 are kinda build along the lines of the Wisp with graduated thicknesses and no abrupt transitions of silicone to plastic. IMO, that's what makes the Quattro FX difficult to successfully use. I think the F10 does a really good job sealing under high pressures. I do use a Padacheek and sometimes Remzzz as liners. Naturally masks are an individual experience but give it a try if you get the chance. M'ohms: that's an interesting tip for a different sort of headgear... thanks.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Sir,
I also use the F10, but I wish it came in an XL size. If it were bigger (longer and wider), it would be my favorite mask. I like the blue mesh headgear so much that I have one for my F10 and my FitLife too.

I'm with you there... it seems like ResMed had a big snafu when all the engineers decided to meet and sort out the actual AirFit F10 mask sizes (XL is definitely missing). Hope they fix that problem FAST.

This happened to me the other night. I disconnected my humidifier and for some reason the EPR was turned on. But that is on a Resmed machine. Make sure the exhale relief on your machine is off. I'm not sure what its called on the Respironics.
