Extreme dry mouth and really tired

Post by cd12793 » Mon Sep 14, 2015 12:17 am

I've had my cpap for 6.5 months and its really helped however recently I've started waking up several times a night due to my mouth and throat being completely dried out and because of this I wake up really tired. I have a full face mask. My machine is a resmed not sure of the model my pressure is 18 I have the tube temp set to 86 degrees and the humidity is at 8 which is as high as it goes. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I've been on Bipap for over 5 years, and recently started having issues with the dry mouth. I've always been a mouth breather, but for some reason now, I wake up several times per night with very dry mouth. I've started using Biotene mouth rinse at night and it helps sometimes. I've also turned my humidifier up slightly. I do not like lots of humidity, make me feel like I'm drowning.

I'm also interested in what others have to say in regards to helping this issue. Been thinking of getting a chin strap, but after reading some posts here, not sure that would help the problems. And have no idea as to where to start to chose one.
Mild sleep apnea people need treatment too!

When you check your humidifier tank in the morning, how much water has been used? Is it almost full? almost empty?
Is this different than from before the dry mouth symptoms started?

Have you looked at your leak rate with SleepyHead or other software? Faces change over time due to weight loss, etc. and that could change how your mask fits now.

It would help if you listed your equipment in your profile, If your machine is a Resmed, the model may be printed on the top front of the machine.

Part-time mouth breather. I guess maybe 50/50 or something like that. I use biotene gel right before bed. I also try to stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking water a lot, though stop by 7 or so in order not to have bathroom break wake-ups. I also use chapstick. I dont know if it does anything but it makes me think it does. I keep my humidity on 2. I live in a hot humid climate (San Antonio, TX), and keep the room temp at about 73 unless my wife sneaks it down a degree or so. My dry-mouth problem is minimal. Sometimes more than others, but the biotene certainly helps. Maybe when I get dry I'm mouth breathing more. Lastly, I work on not mouth breathing to the extent I can, when the sinuses allow me to. There's the tongue to the roof of the mouth and right at the back of the teeth trick that's works fairly well. I do that when I first lay down, and once my nasal passages allow me to breath ok, I close my mouth and focus on anything other than how I'm breathing. Good luck

You need to know (and list) the exact models of equipment you're using.

Too much warm humidity can cause nasal congestion........which in turn can cause more mouth-breathing........which WILL cause "dry mouth" (even in a full face mask).

Try turning the heat down or off. Do nasal cleansing before bedtime.
If you have a machine that's data capable, get the software to read the data and study the reports.
