Newly diagnosed with UARS--16 RDI per hour

Post by ariesgal » Tue Aug 18, 2015 3:32 pm

Hi! I've been using the search function on this site for quite awhile, but creating an account now for the first time

I'm newly diagnosed with UARS via a watch pat sleep study. 16 RDI per hour. Only 3 AHI. Has anyone here had that low an RDI with severe symptoms? Or know of others with a similar RDI? In all the UARS posts I've come across, everyone seems to have a much worse RDI than I do. However, I've also read that there's not always a correlation between the degree of disordered sleep and the symptoms.

I do have A LOT of symptoms. I alternate between insomnia and being flat out unable to wake up. I also have brain fog and daily headaches. I'm considering an oral appliance with a dentist.

How many nights was the study? RDI in an individual can vary widely from night to night. The study night could have been a low RDI night for you.

It was a single night study.

Made an account but now having problems logging in, says the account is already in use.

I've read that anything greater than or equal to 10 RDI an hour is UARS? But I haven't read posts from people with lower RDIs.

Have you had a recent comprehensive medical exam to rule out other problems? Have you reviewed any medications for side effects? What do you take?

Agreed.

Sleeping with my head elevated has reduced the severity of the headaches, noticeably, but not eliminated them.

Did your doctor prescribe CPAP or order a CPAP titration study? If so, give it a try. If it improves your symptoms, that's what really matters.

I don't always walk around the house in socks, but when I do, I find all the wet spots on the floor.

Here is a basic guide in dealing with insomnia,

- Practice good sleep hygiene (Google it and read several sources)
- Eat a good diet
- Have a regular, moderate exercise program
- Try to avoid daytime naps.
- Practice total abstinence of caffeine including sources like chocolate
- Review all medicines, vitamins and supplements you are taking to make sure none are interfering with sleep
- Optimize emotional stress in your life
- Use CPAP software to make sure your therapy is optimized
- If you still don't feel or sleep well, make sure you have regular wellness visits to confirm there are no other medical problems.

Maybe also get a CPAP just to have more options. Good luck with your therapy.

RDI==16 is bad enough, though retarded insurance companies may still refuse you a xPAP

Thanks all, for the feedback. They've suggested trying a dental appliance first.

my insurance refused to pay for DA because my AHI was 4.9, which is below the required 5. They didn't take RDI into consideration at all. Good luck
