Second night on cpap - troubleshooting... pls help

Post by Masta » Wed Aug 05, 2015 2:51 pm

1. The hose attached to my mask, (not the heated tubing), coils up when I roll over in bed, any ideas on how to prevent this? My mask is the AirFit P10 For Her Nasal Pillows.

2. I have a ClimateLineAir Heated Tubing for the Resmed AirSense 10 for Her. I have the heated tubing draped over my beds tall headboard. Whenever I move it makes a noise. I have thought about purchasing a Snuggle Skin Cpap Hose Cover off of amazon.com, but they suggest that the skin not be used for heated cpap hoses. Do any of you know if the cover is ok to use with my heated tubing? MY DME said it was ok, but I dont think the DME knew much about accessories (after discussing certain accessories with him).

3. This morning I woke up with my lips pursed open (like I was puckered up ready to kiss) with air blowing out. It woke both hubby and I straight away. Is this common? Im a nose breather.

I have Sleepyhead installed. Both nights my AHI is zero, my leaks are zero. Not much to see, so I havent attached a picture. My pressure range on my prescription is 4-16.

4. Im struggling with not being able to snuggle into my fluffy memory foam pillow, Im laying on a flat memory foam pillow now, to accommodate the mask, my neck isnt being supported (I have spine issues, so its causing more pain than usual). How do you snuggle into your pillow with a mask on?

I know that its going to take some time to adjust to cpap therapy. I also know that the majority of patients dont feel well rested straight away, it does take some time (months, or maybe never). But my hell, waking up every couple of hours, coz of the mask, air and hose is tiring.

Seems like there are many forum members using some sort of hose cozy on their heated hoses without any issues.
I use this one on my S9 ClimateLine hose. It's not has dense or as heavy as the fleece ones. I have used the other heavier cozies on other hoses and I found the weight slightly annoying and would tug on the mask.

I used to do this on occasion. With time I seemed to have quit doing it. It does make an awful racket though.
As long as you aren't doing it often and prolonged and it doesn't cause a lot of wake ups (and your leak graphs look good) then I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes the tongue drops down and lets the air enter the mouth. With time the tongue learns to not do it as much or as often for most nose breathers.

I have cervical spine issues also (metal plate in my neck) I find that a buckwheat hull pillow works great for me. I can move the hulls so that it supports my cervical spine and then move them again in the area where the mask rests (I sleep primarily on my side) so that there's no pressure on the mask/nose from the bed pillow. You might look at something like that.

Yes, spot on - it can take months to settle down to CPAP. It can be a frustrating battle but do hang in, even if it is only for a few hours at the start of each night. It takes the brain some time to re-adjust to any new sleeping routine so it can rebel and wake you up - most frustrating. So do not have a bad conscience if you find you initially need to take it off after only a short time of use. You will gradually get used to it.

FWIW I have my Autoset ResMed in a cupboard next to the bed on a shelf lower than bed height and have no problem with it tangling. I've used heated and standard hoses without problems. Is is possible to re-locate your CPAP maxchine? In your situation I would try that before embarking on items to suspend etc the hose.

As for breathing through the mouth, that was my concern so I originally used a full face mask. But I gave up on that because off noisy air leaks and now have has a really good seal with the nasal mask shown in my profile below. I have tried head straps to keep the mouth shut but gave up because it became too involved to prepare for bed and ended up with me looking like an Egyptian mummy. Ultimately the straps were not needed and I have no problem about breathing through the mouth.

But that is just my experience. We are all different so none of the above could be helpful.

All the best

John

Do not deride the idiots of this world as they make the rest of us look so much better :-) BUT, avoid being an idiot yourself and PERSIST WITH CPAP.

If the danglin' hose problems persist, consider a hose hanger. It will keep the hose out of the way all night. Do a search for "hose hangers". It has been dicussed many times here. You can buy one or rig up a homemade one.

- The heated hose is not going to produce heat on the outside enough to cause any problems. You could wrap it in dynamite and flash paper and it would be just fine.

- I'm not a doctor, but that pressure range is huge. 4 - 16 cm/w may as well be "set it at whatever you want". I run mine at 5 ish, and it works for me. Too high, and I end up blowing air out of my mouth like you described.

- They sell rubber chin straps that can keep your mouth closed at night if it opening becomes a big problem. I should probably buy one myself but haven't yet.

Yes, it takes some getting used to, but man is it worth it! In no hyperbolic terms, using mine changed my life!

#1. hose hanger, got mine from EBAY under 20 bucks
#2. wrap it if you want, but #1 will fix that also
#3. chin strap or medical tape if you want
#4. I move to the edge of the pillow and let the mask hang over the edge. Stays on fine and no leaks

pay attention to what some call the comfort settings as they help you to tolerate the CPAP. humidity, temperature, ERP, ramp, smart start, the more comfortable you are using it, the more you will use it
Sleeping MUCH better now

Your large pressure range may end up being a problem and if it turns out to be a problem we can help you dial it in better for your needs using Sleepyhead data, but do not set it to a steady pressure of 5 because that's the most comfortable for Locane!!! That's about as ridiculous as wearing a size of clothing because that's what your fiend wears, regardless of whether or not it fits YOU.

Sounds like you are doing a good job with a great attitude and we can help you dial things in for what works best. CPAP is NOT a one size fits all treatment.

I purchased a memory foam pillow from WalMart then cut it to the shape of a pillow designed for cpap users. I'm not sure if it will help but it works for me. I don't know how to post pics here but you can google cpap pillow to get the shape.
