Autoclavable tubing?

Post by Kris Persson » Tue Jul 21, 2015 4:26 pm

Hello!

I'm from Sweden and want someone of you to explain someting for me.
I shall buy a new tubing for my Resmed S8.
There are two choises.
Resmed 14987 standard 6'6'' tubing
and
Resmed 14986 autoclavable standard 6'6'' tubing.
What does "autocalvable" mean?
What is the difference between those two tubings?
Can you please explain in a simple way.

Autoclavable is going to be able to withstand a lot higher cleaning temps than the regular hose.
Not really needed in the home setting though. Overkill.
Usually reserved for in a setting where the hose is going to be used by multiple people (hospital, etc) where killing every single germ is important.

That was a very fast answer!
It only took some minutes!

I thank you very much!

Here's a current thread that goes into some detail:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

The difference between cleaning in residential hot water (about 115 degrees F) and an autoclave is dramatic.
Here is a chart of autoclave temps.

Autoclaves get up to more than double the temperature of your home hot water heater and significantly above boiling.

DUH! How many times would you have to Autoclave a $8.00 XPAP hose to pay for the autoclave? Remember, to add in the cost of electricity, time (labor), storage when not in use (the junk in the house rule).

In what world does this make any sense. I don't clean mine at all, my clean house, my air filtered, my body hooked up to it, my home grown germs, we all got those, you can't autoclave your body, the components can't take the temp, and I can't fit inside.... Jim

It would be good to know you could safely put the tube in boiling water to kill germs. "Normal" tubes don't melt, but they get damaged a bit. BTW, boiling won't necessarily kill ALL germs, but it gets a good percentage of them.

There are some of the newer oven designs that allow for the introduction of steam during the bake cycle.
Perhaps one of those could be used part of the time as a sterilization chamber at suitable temperatures.
The rest of the time they could be used for making delicious French style bread and other goodies without taking additional space. Just thinking about how to justify getting a new and very expensive oven to play with

I am switching over to Induction Cooking, part to save energy, part to make it safer fire wise when we forget how to cook. I could use a induction pressure cooker pan to cook my XPAP hose. Jim
