bye, bye mustache

Post by buckeyered » Fri Jun 30, 2006 9:02 pm

For the first time since 1982 I shaved off my mustache to try to get taping to work, after a few days I now have two sores, one at each corner of the mouth.
I am not sure if this is a result of shaving (my upper lip is really sensitive since I shaved) or the taping, I drool allot in my sleep so this could be a cause as well since the tape seems to absorb the saliva (causing leaks) that then cause my mouth to dry out.
I am going to go back to trying straps until my mouth is not so sore.
I also tried the polygrip strips but my mouth still opens so my options are running out.
Any other suggestions that I can try?

I taped for a long long time, it gets old after a while and you finally give up for a UMFF where you can keep your stache. I still use a UltraMirageII at times but with a mustache it still leaks like a sieve but is great without.

I had tried the Breeze, Nasalaire and most recently the Swift, I just can't tolerate those things sticking in my nares all night long.

Most likely the sores are from shaving off that stache. If you use the right tape it doesn't irritate the skin. There are so many types on the market, some irritate, some don't, some are hard to remove some are not. I even tried that blue painters masking tape.

The only one I found that worked didn't irritate and came off easy was the Johnson & Johnson hypoallergenic 1" paper tape. I think they refer to it as surgical tape because the adhesive doesn't stick as well as the other so it comes off easier.

I used the first one in the upper left corner when I use a nasal only mask:

buckeye,

I know from your prior posts that you have tried full face masks. My thoughts are that you might have been getting them to tight. I know that if I get my UMFF just a little to tight it will leak worse. My mask is loose enough that I nearly have to hold it in place while I start my blower. The air pressure them inflates the cushion and makes a seal. I wear a full beard and mustache and as a result I have leaks. I have just worked it out that I have no leaks blowing into my eyes and my therapy is working.

Don't know if it will work for you but just some food for thought.

Hi buckeyered,

Just try to settle down. After 25 years with a hairy lip you expect everything to be perfect? A couple of sores around the mouth area is nothing!!! Get used to it - and put the strap away, it's not her fault at all! Smart thing to do is just get her to shave as well.

It's Friday and I'm having a good time - first time in a long time.

All the best.

Forgive me, new to the board, but how are the polygrip strips used? And how does the taping work? I've made my own chin strap after dissatisfaction with the official one, but still drool a little, causing irritation. Any information would be good, thanks.

The Poligrip strips are placed between the lips and hold them together to seal the mouth.
If you want to search the forum....go to the top of the page and click on the "search" button....then search on the word "Poligrip" (without the quote marks).

By the way, I've never used them.....don't have to since I use a full face mask..

Best wishes,

I'd say that most of the irritation is due to the shaving. I had a full beard until about three years ago. When I took it off I decided to start shaving my head at the same time (wasn't that much there to begin with ) and it took at least a week or two for the sensitivity to subside. Even now I have to apply some lotion every now and then, though not that often anymore.
