OT: Free Windows 10 Download Preview & New Features

Post by Papit » Tue Jun 23, 2015 1:11 pm

It's a free download for PCs and tablets on July 29 or after (edit: next 12 months) -- IF you reserve it before then. You're eligible if you use Windows 7 or 8.1 and satisfy certain hardware requirements. Once you’ve accepted the upgrade, Microsoft will send you updates for it. It will cost about $110 later if not reserved prior to July 29. (Full article **) Here's how to reserve free Windows 10 separately for each of your PCs and tablets: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... 10-upgrade

Actually, this is not correct. You have one year to upgrade for free, with the year starting on July 29, 2015. You can "reserve" the upgrade prior to July 29 so you will get it on that day, or you can wait and get it later. The smart money is waiting while the pioneers get the bugs worked out. Even though I consider myself a knowledgeable enthusiast, I am waiting until August or September.

Edit: You got it right, andy. It's "can", not must, reserve the upgrade between now and July 29 to get it for free "the easiest way". You then get it for free WHENEVER you choose to activate the download, which can be any time during the 12 months starting on July 29. Waiting to do the download isn't a bad idea. And, for that matter, there's nothing preventing you from changing your mind if you later decide you don't want Windows 10.

and, where does it say that?

from the windows page: "You can reserve your free upgrade in the Get Windows 10 app."

oh, look... from the windows 10 faq:
microsoft wrote:Can I get my free Windows 10 upgrade even if I didn’t reserve?

Yes. The easiest way to get the free upgrade is to reserve, but you can upgrade even if you don’t reserve.

Once Windows 10 is available, we’ll begin notifying devices that their free upgrade is available. Just open the Get Windows 10 app to schedule your upgrade. Note: Some notifications will go out as soon as Windows 10 is available; others may go out in the weeks or months following.

Two words: Win 7.

Why be the crash test dummy for Microsoft?

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Ha, ha... yeah, I guess if your job is to be the bug slamming into the windshield (IT support, development etc) AND you get paid plenty of money to be splatted on a day to day basis, then that's cool. With my Win 7 it's like looking at the world go by in the rear view window... BTW, you never see any bugs splatted on the rear window. Some pidgeon shit occasionally but that's because I park under some telephone wires.

Funny, notification went out today for beta testing of win8.1 at work this afternoon. Not Windows 10. It takes a long time to get a large Corp to test, fix and migrate to new os version for lots of desktops, printers and specialised devices. They have been working on this for more than a year.

Std desktop is WinXP still, skipped win7 for all but a few.
Current Settings PS 4.0 over 10.6-18.0 (cmH2O) - Resmed S9 VPAP Auto w/h5i Humidifier - Quattro Air FFM

Wow, I think we have a handful of XP systems, and 95% are on Windows 7. The rest are a bunch of tablets running 8.1 and a handful of Win 10 test systems.
