hello my name is jacob i am new to th comunity exuse me if it seems like i need to be babyed through this process i am a little mentally slow. anyways long story shorti was just diagnosed after a study im 18 years old250 pounds here were my results my overall AHI was 154.4 i had at the most 29 central apneas and 166 hypno apneas in one hour i think thats bad lol but mainly what i wanted to know is what is the best cpap machine avaliable ive been looking at youtube but many videos are old. also how did you feel after youre first night on cpap i cant wait to try it im really exited hoping it will make me feel better i just want some guidence and maby some support as my family dosent think sleep apnea is even a medical thing they think its just some big pharma conspiracy haha luck me right, so yeah thats all sorry for any spelling or grammer errors like i said im mentally handicapped thanks guys!!

Since I am new as well I will let others comment on "the best machine available". The response I imagine will come is that it is a personal choice as is mask type, and of course different machines have different functionalities. But the main thing seems to be to get a machine that is data capable so you can see how your therapy is going firsthand. I know people use different brands, but Resmed and Phillips Respironics seem to always be up at the top of the list.

My personal experience with CPAP on the first night (titration study) was that the next day I felt great. Again, that is my experience and this differs person to person. OSA is very much a "medical" thing- bad things happen when one doesn't get enough quality sleep. I feel that once you get the right machine, mask, and settings (specific to you) you will get to feeling better too!

People who have severe apnea usually are the people who do best on CPAP because the improvement is very noticeable.

Be sure you read my "What you need to know BEFORE you meet your DME" in my signature below. It will tell you what you need to know when dealing with the DME, but the machines are out of date, so I will let someone come along and tell you what the current Respironics and ResMed machines are.

With severe apnea, I highly recommend an APAP over a CPAP, but you may have to fight the DME on that. With an APAP you can do a lot of self testing if it's not working well for you--it's more guesswork with a straight CPAP.

I'm new to cpap but have been doing a lot of research. The top of the line machines are Resmed Airsense 10 auto and Resprionics Auto series 60. They are about equal. After that is Devilbiss auto and then something and paykel Icon.

That said, I will let more experienced folk add their two bits since you apnea is clearly severe and mine is mild.

Jacob, have you had your titration yet - the study where you use the machine and they determine your effective pressure? The results of that test will be considered in the type of machine you get. There are things to be considered like how high of pressure you need and how those centrals respond to treatment. If you can, posting the titration results could get you some targeted suggestions.

Jacob, it's too bad your family does not support you more in understanding the seriousness of sleep apnea, especially a case as severe as yours. You should receive a recommendation from your doctor or sleep center, and a prescriptions for a machine. Considering you have complex apnea consisting of central and hypopnea at an astounding 154 events per hour, you don't need to worry about what the best machine is because the right machine will undoubtedly be fully data capable. Until you have the recommendation or prescription from your doctor it's hard for us to help.

Contact your doctor or the sleep center and ask when you will receive the prescription. Keep a copy for your records. This will be important for obtaining equipment and supplies. Do you expect to get the machine and equipment through insurance, or will you be looking for used or discounted equipment?
