Mirage Quattro Problems

Post by Shonuff » Mon May 11, 2015 6:07 am

Hi All!!!

The VA sent me home with a Mirage Quattro full face mask. I have a hard time getting it to seal near my eyes and it cause a painful pressure sore on the bridge of my nose. I have been using it for about a week now. I'm just wondering if I should give it more time or trade it for something else? If I trade it for something else, what should I try next?

There are a couple helpful links for that mask. You might start looking at:

Did they actually measure your face or just eyeball sizing?

There's a template to help in sizing. If the sizing is off the usual hints won't help much.

I've been using the Quattro for a long time. I found that to eliminate the leaks that appear at the top of the nose, I moved the mask down about 1/4 inch so the top of the mask is resting on a wider part of the nose. That brings the lower part of the mask slightly lower on the chin, but I have no problem with that....ALSO...be sure that the mask is not too big. I was originally measured as a large and needed to exchange that mask for a medium. If you find that the leaks cannot be eliminated, there are mask liners and an anti leak strap available for that mask.

Like LSAT I was measured for a larger size(med) but it leaked around the eyes, I have gone to a small and it works so much better...good luck, it just takes a little time.

Thanks for all the tips!!! I printed off the measurement tool from Resmed and found that I need a small mask instead of a medium. So I went to the VA today and they gave me a small mask. I also got a gel like thing for the bridge of my nose.

Yeah, I was going to suggest something to protect the bridge of your nose. I like the Quattro a lot; it's my mask of choice, but I have had to use Padacheek's nose bridge protector. It works very well for me.

If you continue to have trouble with leaking, you could also try mask liners. My Quattro Air was very leaky in the beginning, and I tried a small, thinking medium was too big... but the darn thing ended up in my mouth! Turned out medium was the right size after all, and for me, liners were the only thing that helped. Eventually I switched to the F10, which uses the same cushion, so I've continued using them, probably always will.

Now using AirFit F10 mask; Quattro Air is backup mask. RemZzzz mask liners with both.

Library Lady my experience is same as yours. I must use 2 liners but they come to my eyes at the top so I cut them down some, fits much better then. Mask will still leak around my lower cheeks on high pressure, I have to pull it and reposition and I'll also turn off machine so it starts over at 4, that way I can get back to sleep easier.

Good you resized with the proper sizing gauge (should have been done by the DME at the initial fitting to begin with).

That said you absolutely should not need any add-ons like gel pads with the Quattro -- the old and new Quattros have some of the best double wall cushion designs out there and pressure sores at the nasal bridge are often an indication you have the mask adjustment knob or headgear pulled too tightly onto the top of your nose. Try to loosen the mask as much as possible without it leaking (use the Mask Fit setting on your machine).

The PR Amara had known issues with nasal bridge sores due to its cushion design, but that really should not be happening on a Quattro. Definitely re-adjust or discuss with your DME about a better fit mask.

Good luck!

The VA also sent me home with the Mirage Quattro. I believe it's the standard mask they use in their sleep studies.

I used the Mirage Quattro for the first month-and-a-half then came back in to the VA complaining of waking up not feeling rested, brain fog, headaches, despite averaging a very low AHI every night with the mask.

The guy gave me a new full-facial mask- it's more comfortable than the Mirage and is slightly smaller. I can't remember the name sadly. Different masks fit differently on various people. I'd suggest going back into the VA's sleep center and asking for a new mask.

Good luck!
