Gasping for air

Post by Griffin607 » Thu Apr 30, 2015 11:53 am

Question, I'm new to the cpap machine and I'm having a tough time keeping up with it in the middle of the night. Seems that I wind up gasping from too much air throat dry waking up aprox two hours into the night. Is this just something I have to get used to? Has this happened to others??
Thank-you

Were you titrated in a sleep center? Have you tried using a chin strap to keep your mouth shut when you sleep? Around the time you woke up, check on SleepyHead to see if you had any large leak events or if the flow rate was interrupted.

Please sign up on the board, then fill in your equipment list ( look at the bottom of my post for an example, you do it in the user control panel).

Once you have done that people here can tell if you have a data capable machine. If you do, you then need to setup software to read the data from your machine, and post some reports so we can give you som advice. I know this seems like a lot, but without further information no one will be able to do more than guess on how to help.

To maybe jump start a little, what exact make and model of pap machine do you have?

PS. No you don't have to suffer as you describe, the collective hive mind here can solve an incredible amount of user issues. But it does need more info.

Usually when people use the term "gasping" I find it associated to mouth venting. If you're using a nasal mask, try getting a full face mask or chinstrap. They are both designed to treat mouth venting - chinstrap to PREVENT it, full face to ALLOW it.

If you're already on a full face mask, it's going to depend a lot on your settings of the device. That being said, there's definitely an adjustment period of 2-4 weeks for most people. If you're using it every night for 4 weeks and still have the same problems, you'll want to follow up with your sleep doctor to consider a pressure setting adjustment.

You mention that your throat is dry so I'd suggest increasing humidifier settings.
