ResMed Mirage Quattro Forehead support change?

Post by Into the night » Sat Apr 11, 2015 4:16 pm

I got a ResMed Mirage Quattro full-face mask when they first came out, and I could unscrew and remove the forehead support for cleaning or replacement.

I just got the "new" version, and I don't seem to be able to do this...I crank it all the way out and it stops..the pressure I've put on it is near the breaking limit of the plastic but it won't budge, exactly feels like they changed it not to be removed anymore.

Did they change it? Or do I just need to apply super human strength to the screw to get it to release?

Dang. If I could somehow explain in units of force how much force I'm using and not getting a budge..I dunno man.
It really seems like they changed it, I've cranked on it to the limit of breaking the plastic and it won't budge.

I'm hosed if I break it too, like..seriously hosed. dang. dang dang dang.

I mean no disrespect, but your turning it counter clockwise correct?

I'm not sure what to take a picture of, it looks in all ways externally normal to my old mask.
It's quite a job for me to post pics..older computer, no cell phone. I'll try in the next post.

Yes, turning it the correct way..you extend it all the way out and then a little pressure and it comes off, both sides. This time..to the breaking point and nothing.

How do I post pictures here? Is this one of those old fashioned forums where I cannot upload pictures directly and have to find another server to host it and put the link here??

I dunno, it's straight out of the package, I've never use it even once. Brand New.

Oy this is killing me, I just want to take it off the new mask and put it on my old mask. sigh.

I cannot post images unless I sign up for this forum and frankly I'm In no frame of mind to sit here and go through all this.

Guess I'm hosed unless somebody has an answer. I really think it will break the plastic and not give. I've seen other defects in ResMed masks from the factory before, but this is the worst. I seriously think ResMed is going downhill since they moved production out of Australia.

Talk about a bad day...from the moment I woke up nothing has worked, including this frickin' mask.

1) why are you making such a federal case out of not being able to disassemble a *brand new* mask?

2) it takes more force when new than you'd image, for years, I didn't think mine unscrewed all the way. until it wore some and loosened up, and then one day "oh, will you look at that" and then later the clicky bits broke off so it turned on it's own, so I wedged some felt in there and forgot about it.

and, fwiw, I just unscrewed my recently purchased quattro.

check the manual you got, it lists separate pieces, no?

I cant say one way or the other but I will put money on the fact they have NOT changed the design. It's the same ancient mask we know and love. It would be senseless to prevent unscrewing the piece, anyway. The whole thing was meant to come apart for full cleaning.

Just unscrew it all the way == it will NOT break it. Just do it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "federal case"..that's 1940's era slang, correct?
In essence, you are supposed to be able to disassemble it to clean it and I need the piece for an older mask, for reasons which I won't go into. I can't afford to break it.

Did not get a manual with this one, just a straight replacement from the medical provider.
I even tried to call ResMed customer service but..in keeping with the luck I've had today, they are closed for the weekend.
I can try and force this thing but if it breaks, again..I'm hosed. I don't have a mask at that point and won't be able to sleep.

Yes, it should come apart..agreed. But given the defects I've seen in other ResMed masks..well it really feels like they screwed-up on this one.

Why on earth would you disassemble that part for cleaning? I've never (deliberately) disassembled a mask to clean it. I've always just removed the headgear and stuck it in a large plastic coffee can with Dawn dishwashing liquid and hot water and soaked it......and then went over the seals, etc. by hand. Then rinsed it a couple of times.

But, I just got out my old Quattro (original 2007 vintage) and I can't unscrew that part to take it apart, either. And, I'm not going to try to break it to see if I CAN.

And, when I did use mine, I used the forehead support in the position with the screw turned fully clockwise......so the forehead support was as far away from my forehead as it would go.
