Dr. Phil guest today

Post by Guest » Wed Jan 26, 2005 5:52 pm

Today Dr. Phil had a guest on who was a male & overweight. He said (the guest) that his dr. told him he had sleep apnea due only to being overweight & that if he lost the weight his apnea would go away.
My dr. told me that being overweight can worsen the problem, but that it does not cause a person to have apnea unless they are very overweight. This guy was about 280 & I'm not sure of his height.
I'm just wondering about this because there seems to be a huge movement in this country to blame everything on being overweight. While being overweight does cause lots of problems or makes them worse, I hate to see sleep apnea now added to the heap of things we all have to feel guilty about having even if we are the least bit overweight.

Being overweight can exacerbate the problem, but it is not the cause of the problem.

No need to feel guilty.

Dr. Phil made a point of asking the guy several times why he would choose to be overweight & stop breathing at night if he could lose the weight & solve the problem. Millions of people watch his show & now everyone is going to think that being overwright causes sleep apnea! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!
