Can Philips Respironics Masks used on Resmed marchine

Post by jane20041 » Thu Apr 02, 2015 5:23 am

I am doing one month trial with the Philips marchine and mask. I always read people using Resmed, but Resmed here requires me to get a prescription first, which would cost me $250 for nothing.I though all the marchine works in the same theory, so I hired a Philips marchine instead. I am using the Philips Respironics Nuance™ Gel Nasal Pillow Mask with Headgear, it works well. But the marchine is a lillte bit noisy. I am wondering if I buy a Resmed marchine, can I use Philips mask on it, is the tube all the same size? Thank you inadvanced.

Yes... you can use any mask on any machine.

Before assuming that the noise problem is coming from the machine itself, make sure that what you are hearing and finding bothersome is not mask noise. When masks spring leaks (even small ones), the leaks can create a fair amount of noise. And some masks have noisier exhaust vents than other masks.

It's also not uncommon for the hose to magnify the sound of your own breathing. And people sometimes think the magnified breathing noises are coming from the machine itself. If the noise sounds like your own breathing, but magnified, try moving the hose to a different position. If possible keep the hose off your pillow and away from your head as much as possible.

Yes, you can use the Philips mask with a Resmed machine. But if the problem is a noisy mask, then swapping the machine is probably not going to fix the noise problem.

As for the tubes (hoses): There are two standard sizes of tubes in the CPAP world. The "regular" tube is a 22mm tube, but both PR and Resmed also make a 15mm hose. Both machines are capable of using both sizes of hoses, but you have to specify which size you are using in the (clinician's) set up menu. The default hose for the Resmeds is the 15mm size, and the default hose for the PR is the 22cm. So if you want to reuse you current hose with a Resmed machine, you will need to figure out which size hose you have and then set the hose type correctly in the clinical set up menu on the new machine.

Another note about hoses: The optional heated hoses for the PR machine and the Resmed machine are NOT interchangeable. If you use a heated hose, you will need to get a new heated hose for the new machine.
