Cooler air

Post by acctingman » Wed Mar 18, 2015 10:08 am

CPAP newb with a question of how can I make the air coming out a bit cooler? The air coming out now is a bit too warm for me and it's a bit uncomfortable and it's one of the reasons I'll take it off in the middle of the night. I'm one of those who prefers breathing in cooler air

Thank you

My first CPAP had a non-heated "pass-over" humidifier. Because it wasn't heated it relied on extra surface area to be effective. As a result it was quite large, and designed so that the CPAP machine would sit on it.
Because of the extra distance the air would have to take, the output port was had a special fitting pushed onto it to allow a pressure sensing tube to feed back to the machine.
It's possible that this could work with a modern machine, but would probably involve some tweaking of the settings.

It looks like they still make the things: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... gQoddYsABQ

Your profile is incomplete so we really don't know what machine you are using. Most Remstar machine humidifiers can be controlled by a knob with settings from zero to 5. Zero is no added heat. If you have a 60 series, there are settings we can guide you to in the clinician menu, but I'm just guessing since we don't know what your equipment is.

I'll get that updated tonight and thank you

That knob is set to 3 right now....I'll set it to 1 and see how that goes.

If it is still too hot turn off the humidifier... I used to use mine but don't anymore. Try it and see if you like it with the humidifier off, if not, try it at a lower setting.

It needs to be said that the heat setting is intended to be a humidity control.
With the tiny surface of water in the heated humidifier, there will be little moisture transfer with the heat off.

You can also turn it to "0" or Off.
I haven't used heated humidity since I started therapy in May of 2005. I like/need the cool, "passover" humidity to keep my nasal passages open. Too much heated humidity can actually cause more nasal congestion.

Look on the bottom of the blower unit for a 3 digit model number...tell us that model number...it might have a DS, REF or P in front or behind the 3 digits.

If it has 60 as the last 2 digits....look at the hose and see if it has a black end on the long hose where it attaches to your humidifier.
Is there a black coupling or are both ends white/gray?

If you are new to cpap and got your machine from a regular DME supplier it is highly unlikely that you are using the "remstar heated humidifier" that you are currently showing in your profile because it was discontinued in 2006 or 2007...so let's figure out exactly what your equipment is and what is available to you in terms of options depending on what you are using.

It appears someone is working on a cooling device. I searched the U.S. Patents and found at least the following;

United States Patent 9,795,758
Ahmad , et al. October 24, 2017
Ventilator with integrated cooling system

Abstract
A ventilation gas cooling apparatus is configured in a modular form adapted for selective removable engagement to a ventilator. The apparatus includes a gas inlet port, a gas delivery port, a pressure sensing port, and a thermoelectric cooler. The inlet port is fluidly connectible to a source of therapeutic breathing gas at an external end and is fluidly connectible to an inlet of the ventilator at an internal end. The delivery port is fluidly connectible to a patient circuit at an external end and is fluidly connectable to an outlet of the ventilator at an internal end. The pressure sensing port is fluidly connectible to both a pressure sensing port of the ventilator and to the patient circuit. The apparatus may further include a cooling fluid system operative to circulate either a gas or liquid coolant along at least a portion of a multi-lumen tube integrated into the patient circuit.

3 year old thread.
OP has not visited forum in 2 years.

Not good enough for SPAM, haven't they heard of A/C in Calif. Maybe by now, if you are on a vent, your air input temp is probably way down on your list of problems. Jim
