Do you turn the machine off during nocturnal wandering?
Please forgive this (possibly very dumb) question that probably has a very obvious answer.
When I picked up my Wisp my RT showed me how to unclip the hose from the front of the mask for bathroom breaks or other nocturnal wandering (I frequently have to get up to see what priceless heirloom the cats have broken now.)
But what do I do about the fact that the unclipped hose is now blowing air everywhere? Do I turn off the machine? When I turn it back on will the ramp start all over again? Will turning it off mess up my data or re-set my usage numbers for the night?
The learning curve for this stuff has a way of making me feel pretty stupid.

I turn it off and take the mask off. Don't have to hide the hose end from the missus It will show up as a gap of x minutes on your data for the night.

Re: Do you turn the machine off during nocturnal wandering?
I would recommend that you turn it off. The blowing is going to show up in your stats as a major leak and could skew your statistics. Since you're using a S9, you could set it to Autostart. That way the unit will start as soon as you start to breathe through the mask. It will then shutdown when you either remove the mask or disconnect the hose.

Re: Do you turn the machine off during nocturnal wandering?
If you turn the machine off then yes, when you turn it back on the ramp will also be started again. That happens with each and every time someone turns the machine off and then back on again when the ResMed ramp feature is enabled.
Same thing happens if you use the Smart Start feature enabled...for that one if you unhook the mask and let the machine continue to run it will quickly realize that you are no longer attached and it shuts the machine off. There will also be a brief large leak spike show up when this happens.
I personally have always just removed the mask and turned the machine off right when I remove the mask if I get up in the middle of the night for some reason. My mask is easy to refit but I can see where other masks aren't so easy to get sealed again. I have never needed or used the ramp feature.
If you let the machine just run (don't have Smart Start enabled) it will flag a leak spike and quickly realize you aren't attached and the time that the machine blows will be omitted from the therapy time of use. I think it reports something like "machine was on but no breathing detected" and it's not part of the usage hours.
The leak spikes won't skew your leak reports horribly but they will skew them a little bit. Will affect maximum leak numbers and potentially the 95% numbers.

Re: Do you turn the machine off during nocturnal wandering?
I unhooked my mask and let the tube blow early on two times and the leak graph in sleepyhead both those days is useless because of the huge spikes. I have my ramp set for five minutes so stopping and starting is not a big deal.

Re: Do you turn the machine off during nocturnal wandering?
I remove my mask which causes the machine to turn off (Smartstart). I need to put my glasses on before I wander anywhere and I can't wear them with my mask. I seldom have to adjust my mask when I put it on, as it fits very well by just removing one side of the straps.

Re: Do you turn the machine off during nocturnal wandering?
You can change the ramp so that it's only 5 minutes (or as long or as short as you want), or turn off the ramp altogether. I used the ramp for the few weeks, then turned it off. Even without the ramp, the pressure doesn't come up instantaneously, it takes a few seconds to ramp up the pump.
And yes, I turn off the machine (and take off my mask) when I get up at night. But I don't get up very often, and nasal pillow masks are really easy to put back on.
Don't know if smartstart will also use the ramp every time it restarts, or not. I've never used it *smile*.

Your Subject asks: "Do you turn the machine off during nocturnal wandering?"
But, in your post, you ask: "Do I turn off the machine?"
Personally, I have always turned mine off and then removed my mask......then reattach my mask and restart my machine.
I KNOW it will screw up MY data if I don't turn it off. I don't want a huge leak messing up my stats.
What YOU do is YOUR choice.
