Noises from face mask
Noises from face mask
Hello, I am new to this group. My problem may have been discussed somewhere else on this site, if so, please tell me where to look for it. I am so frustrated and disgusted right now, I'm about to give up. My problem is, I am now on my third full face mask and I cannot find a way to keep the masks from making noises, because they do not seal properly against my face. I am female, no facial hair and nothing is present to get in between the mask and my face. I have tried adjusting each mask, multiple ways, including making them so tight, that I've got very deep red marks on my skin, the day after. At bedtime, Initially, the fit of the mask seems fine, but as I drift off to sleep and my face relaxes, the awful pfffftttt noises begin. The noise is so loud, it wakes me up, I'll adjust the mask again, and just as I'm drifting back to sleep, the noises start again. I have explained this problem to my DME Company (a mail order company referred by the sleep study center and sleep therapist). They have been very cooperative and nice about the whole thing, and have sent additional masks for me to try, with no luck. If someone else has had this problem, can you tell me what was done to correct it? Is there another adjustment I should try? Is there a type of full face mask that seals better? I have been given the "gel" type, and the material doesn't really seal well, it is rather pliable. If there's a better way to describe my dilemma or suggestion I could make to the DME company, can you tell me what to say. Thanks to anyone who can help. I know how important the CPAP therapy is to my health, so I'm trying no to give up.
Re: Noises from face mask
I tried two full facial masks and had the same problem. If I even moved my head a tiny bit the mask would start making that noise. Someone recommended the Wisp nasal mask and I now use that. It fits much better, I can even sleep on my side without it moving.

Re: Noises from face mask
you might try a Swift FX or a P10 and a chin strap .. this has worked for many of us here.
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Thanks for your responses. I cannot use the nasal-only type mask because my mouth opens when I fall asleep. I have been told, because this happens, I need to use a full face mask. Any suggestions for improving the seal on a gel mask or does anyone use another type of full face mask that isn't gel? It seems that this flexible material is what's causing the pfffftttt noise.

The "problem" could actually be your bed pillow. If your head is sinking in too far, it could be pushing the mask out of alignment. Lots of different pillows designed for this therapy and others work better than the standard fiberfill ones.
I use the water-based pillow listed in my profile below. I was using it long before I started therapy and it has worked great with this therapy. I've tried on occasion (experimenting) to use fiberfill pillows again and they were a disaster and I had to go back to my Chiroflow.

From everything I've read, the full face gel masks don't seal worth a darn.deer wrote:Thanks for your responses. I cannot use the nasal-only type mask because my mouth opens when I fall asleep. Re: Noises from face mask
The pfffftttt noises are referred to as facial farts. They often can be eliminated with a mask liner.

Wow, thanks to those who took the time to help me with some great suggestions and information!! Since I have a few full face masks, first, I'm going to try to make a mask liner, to see if it helps with the "facial farts." And, I will definitely replace my pillow.
I didn't know you could get a nasal mask with chin strap. Just to be sure I'm understanding this correctly -- Is the purpose of the chin strap to keep your mouth closed? I already have a nasal mask -- is it possible to buy a separate chin strap or do I have to buy the mask w/chin strap as a single "unit?" I think this option would be wonderful, so much less plastic on my face, fewer straps, easier to put on and take off. Before I dive into that option, does anyone out "there" have problems with this type of apparatus?

Re: Noises from face mask
mask liners made all the difference for me, instead of the squealing or braaaappping noises that would wake me up, they'd tame leaks to nothing more than a quiet sssssssshhhhh.deer wrote:Wow, thanks to those who took the time to help me with some great suggestions and information!! padacheek.com is run by one of the members here, going by the username 'padacheek' and they make some liners that many people really like.

Re: Noises from face mask
Mask liners were a game changer for me! There's also a mask liner called RemZzzs... they are available from many DMEs, or from our forum sponsors: https://www.cpap.com. I now use liners that I make myself from a pattern I got off the Internet, I googled DIY Cotton Mask Liner", and cut up a t-shirt. It's been months since I purchased RemZzzs, and made my own liners. I use a clean one each night, then put it in a mesh bag and then wash them with my laundry... I lay them flat to dry, then iron them. I use them over and over again. It might not be necessary to iron them, but I do it to help them keep their shape.
