I've been using the ultra mirage nasal mask for close to a year without problem. Within the last week or two, I've noticed it started making a whistling or wheezing sound but only when I exhale. I've pressed the mask against my face to see if there's a leak but I can't detect one.
Has anyone ever had this problem or has a solution?

Ultra Mirage Nasal mask problem
Snore:
When that happened to me I gave the mask cushion a carefull cleaning and it stopped the whistling! The only other thing I can think of is the cushion may need to be replaced.
Hope this helps!

SnoreNoMore2005,
I agree with ufo13 about maybe needing a replacement. I use the Ultra Marage II Nasal Mask myself. The rep that brought my cpap to my house set and went over everything with me. I was told that ResMed replace parts every six months. Perhaps you should get the soft flexible cushion that fits around the nasal mask replaced. It a removable and replacable part.
Wish you luck,
balba

SNM:
If there's no leak when you press the mask on your face then the whistling may be coming from the exhaust port. I've noticed on my ultra-mirage2 that the exhale does tend to have a bit more of a soft whistle to it in general. Anything blocking the airflow through the exhaust port can cause the whistling to increase. If there's some condensation forming from humidified air that may be increasing the whistle sound, for example. I would try cleaning the mask overall, but pay special attention to the exhaust port by removing the cover from it and cleaning the cover as well as the hole where the air comes out. Next time you hook up and start the machine see if the whistling tends to increase over time- this may indicate condensation buildup in which case you may want to crank down the humidifier or find a way to cover the mask so it stays a bit warmer.

Thank you for your tips. I'm inclined to think it has something to do with the exhaust port, too. However, I'll take it completely apart and give it a thorough cleaning again. I used to take it apart and clean it ever week, but was told by someone that by doing so wears the parts out faster.
If it was an actual leak around the seal, I would think by pressing the mask against my face, it would make the leak stop or at least sound different.
Thanks again

Thanks windflyer
WIndflyer, you hit the nail on the head. When I squeezed the cover over the exhaust vent, the whistling went away. I noticed that the cover did not fit quite as tightly as it did once, but I didn't put 2 + 2 together. Anyway, I ordered a new vent cover and hope that will solve the problem.
Thanks for your help.
