Caffeine

Post by justin25taylor » Sun Feb 01, 2015 6:22 pm

I read in another thread about new XPAP users becoming more sensitive to caffeine. There's not many things I enjoy more than coffee. I've had days where I've gotten dizzy or shaky. This was never an issue before CPAP. Is the improved sleep causing this?

I am feeling better than I have in years.

My mother would get a headache if she couldn't get her coffee.
She brewed the darkest coffee I have ever seen/tasted.
One of the ranch hands sneaked a spoon handle in to breakfast.
Pulling it out of his cup, he stated that it might be a tad stronger than usual.
Before cpap, I drank lots of cola or Dew trying not to doze off and get canned.

There's another aspect too, caffeine aggravates GERD a lot, and many OSA patients have GERD, which does not help you get better, so dropping it would certainly help you - just don't forget that you can get headaches for a few days if you go cold turkey!

Not sure what you read in another thread, but wondering if the caffeine effect is along the same lines of how sometimes after using CPAP medication dosages have to be adjusted. The mind and body of one who is sleep deprived may have different levels of hormones and chemicals than when rested, so it's easy to think that those things we put into our body might interact differently. When I was in the oblivion of sleep deprivation no amount of caffeine made me jittery - I was too numb to feel much of anything. Now I have my limits, but still enjoy a few good cups every day.

Thank you all.
This confirms my suspicion. I've been cutting back on the coffee and will continue to do so. I still would like a couple cups in the morning though...
The withdrawals are interesting. I guess caffeine is like any other drug.

Caffeine withdrawal can last as long as 2 weeks. Headaches are to be expected while you are abstaining for it. Good Luck.

Just wanted to check if you are diabetic. Low blood sugars can cause the symptoms that you have. I am on oral medication and find at times I have weakness and shakiness and know it is time to eat. Cpap may lower blood sugar levels. http://www.webmd.com/diabetes/news/2005 ... e-diabetes

No diabetes or hypoglycemia. Dr. checked for both.

I am not going to completely give up caffeine, just try not to drink 10 cups of coffee anymore.
