Dreams :(

Post by ThellraAK » Fri Jan 23, 2015 3:29 am

I haven't had any in a long time, my compliance has been great, my AHI low, as in less than 3, but I knocked my mask off at the 2 hour mark on a 8 hour sleep, and had the first dreams I could remember in a very long time.

Is that a sign I'm not getting good sleep? I take Ambien, Naproxen and Tylenol PM to sleep (I am a shift worker and have a hard time sleeping during the daytime)

It's a sign you need to keep your mask on .

My experience has been the exact opposite. I dream more, and the dreams are much more vivid while using cpap.

I used to never remember dreaming before using cpap, my third night on the mask I had such a vivid dream I threw myself out of bed and cut my ear on the nightstand. Thankfully since then my dreams have been less action packed but I do seem to remember having more. my AHi has been under 1 mostly since starting a month ago.

conventional wisdom is that if you don't wake up (at least a little) within a short time after a dream (or during) you won't remember it. you're still dreaming, but you sleep through them.

your less restful state without the cpap had you remembering it.

I think Palerider nailed it. Before you started using CPAP, you didn't remember any dreams because the apnea kept you from reaching REM state. Now, it sounds like you are reaching REM state but are sleeping so soundly that you don't usually wake up after the dreams - so you don't remember them. You probably knocked the mask off during a dream and then you woke up enough to remember it.

All those sleep aids can also affect your sleep states.

Before I started treatment I had frequent nightmares. My 15-year-old son would wake me up because I was screaming in my "sleep" - I chalk it up to my body freaking out about not getting enough O2. I also frequently woke and felt alert, but my body was completely frozen and nothing I did would seem to snap me out of it. I really hated that, and it hasn't happened once since I finally got the proper treatment for my apnea. I don't seem to remember dreaming these days, but as long as I feel rested, I'm okay with that. I agree with Palerider as well - the cpap is doing its job, hence, no dreams...

I had some episodes (don't remember a count) like that, where I'd have a nightmare and jolt awake, and be scared spitless, and be frozen....

don't remember any in the years since cpap started.

Change that "p" to an "h" in scared spitless, and yup... I'm right there with you I don't miss that fun experience one bit.

no no, it wasn't anything as terrifying as dealing with todays police.

fortunately, the closest I've come to police abuse and harassment (so far) was one jerk of a state trooper who was all full of himself, and just being a royal jackass...

the another time when riding with a friend in his new car, and a cop pulled us over and came up hand on gun, (but not drawn) because his paper tags looked fishy or something and his regular plates hadn't arrived yet... at least that cop was polite about it and apologized after running my friends license.

Since we're talking about police run-ins - in the mid-90s I was pulled over on my way home after performing in summer theater (paid, I might add [brush off shoulder]) in small-town Texas (actually, the musical's name was Texas), and we got pulled over for no particular reason. The officer didn't give us a reason for pulling us over, but he made sure to say to us that "it's people like you who ruin a small town like this." Well, thanks guy! We did tend to come home late after the show, but that's showbiz and a long drive from Palo Duro Canyon to get home. I guess we were too artsy looking for his taste.
I don't have any paranoia or dislike for police, in general - in fact, I have beloved family who have had long careers in that profession, but that experience really stunk... I think I know who the asshat in that scenario was...

Maybe the officer was checking the air for "probable cause".
Lots of small towns in Texas, and I believe Sheriff was a detective, not a patrolman.

Yes... but we all start out as a patrolman.
