Experience with sleep tracking devices?

Post by balor123 » Sun Jan 11, 2015 9:43 am

Other than a SpO2 monitor, I found the following devices or sale which track sleep:

Beddit
Sleepace
S+ by Resmed
Zeo (out of business and presumably useless now?)

Anyone have experience with these? I'm interested in them because they can measure breathing activity. However, they're tailored toward improving sleep quality whereas I want to use them as another metric for measuring apneas / calculating AHI. Do any of these provide the kind of data necessary for this purpose?

You are correct in your analysis that all on your list are attempting to track "sleep quality",,,,

I can personally attest only to the S+. It seems to do a good job of tracking your breathing and movements, and based on that it gives you feedback about your sleep patterns, but it does NOT give you AHI or measure apneas.

The S+ is interesting in that you can see it track your breathing "real time" in the demo mode when you first load the program, but once you tell it to actually begin monitoring your sleep for the night, that breathing graph disappears and you get only a report the next morning of your sleep patterns (awake, light, deep, REM) which are based on that breathing detection, but you don't get a readout of the breathing graph itself, only an interpretation of the results based on it.

Only a "data capable" PAP machine and software (e.g. SleepyHead, Rescan, Encore) can do what you want.

In other words, get SleepyHead and download from your machine and you will have what you want anyway....

I have the ResMed S+

It measures four stages of sleep by watching your breathing pattern with a bedside sensor that detects your chest movements. So the resulting data breaks down how much time you spend in awake state, light sleep, deep sleep, and REM.

It will not provide any AHI or Apnea data, nor do I think any of the other devices that you listed will either. I know there are some folks on here that use the Zeo so they might speak to that when they see your post.

I don't know of any commercial device that could possibly give you any AHI data other than a PAP device like a CPAP or APAP, etc......

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I thought it had a nice ring to it.

I'm always amazed at what the Zeo Bedside fans have done to keep the device alive... especially Woody's work at QuantifiedSelf. It was the first big step in relatively comprehensive sleep tracking and still is the best solution outside of a sleep lab. You can even find instructions on how to rebuild the headbands, including replacing the forehead sensors with off the shelf parts. Reminds me of the early VW bugs and the huge fanbase and product aftermarket that emerged in the following years. Okay, maybe not that big

Can the data collected from the Zeo Mobile units be downloaded into Sleepyhead or not since there is no SD card?

Sorry, Sleep_quest, there isn't a way that I know of, right now, to get the data from the mobile units into Sleepyhead. I don't have and haven't worked with a mobile unit, but it seems getting data downloads from them is difficult. If you could download the data and get it into the same CSV format as the Bedside export then it could be imported to SleepyHead. You might want to check this thread in the QS forum: https://forum.quantifiedself.com/thread ... -your-data for posts regarding mobile units and data downloads.

Yeah, thanks, I got it! I was thinking Zeolot might be a good descriptor

I am interested specifically in sleep tracking alarms. I currently have a sleeptracker pro watch - they are great, but the company was bought out last year and they will no longer be made. I also have, as a backup, the Gear4 Renew, which I got for $20 on Amazon.com
http://www.stage.gear4.com/product/_/42 ... leepclock/

I had a Withings Aura, but I hated it because the light was too briight and I didn't like the imprecise controls - instead of buttons, you have to tap it a number of times. I used it one night and then returned it.

I have also looked into as backups:
Philips Resperonics Actiwatch Pro - its $1000 (made for for research than consumers)
http://actigraphy.respironics.com/devic ... h-pro.html
Axbo - about $300
http://www.axbo.com/pages/home
Omron has a couple
http://investor.resmed.com/phoenix.zhtm ... ID=1699240
Lark - I think the alarm only works with Samsung
http://checkout.lark.com/

There also are a few not yet available:
Sevenhugs - for the whole family (not sure it has an alarm)

Napwell
