Advice on mouth taping?

Post by cwillis » Sun Jan 04, 2015 12:40 am

I'm going to try and tape my mouth tonight to see what result comes of it, what do you guys use, should I break out my Ductape? Or just Medical tape, and any method?

Paper tape would probably do the least damage.

I believed it was serious. I am considering doing the same for dry mouth.

I'm hoping to see a change in my AHI numbers as far as leaks go?

I'll be interested in hearing how it goes.

I use heavy duty firstaid fabric tape, just a 3 inch strip vertically...used to tape across the mouth, but no longer necessary. Don't forget to put an emergency pull tab fold at an end!

I use 3M Nexcare paper tape, 1 inch wide and tape horizontally across my mouth. It is very gentle. I used to leave a small opening at the corners of the mouth but air was still escaping so now I plan on making the tape a bit longer and covering the corners too. Some people make a small slit in the center of the tape to allow "emergency" breathing but I haven't tried this.

I just tried the 1" wide paper tape without a chinstrap. This has produced the best AHI numbers to date and was more comfortable than the chinstrap. I highly recommend that you fold the tape back on itself creating a 1/2" to 1" pull tab on one end. I didn't do this on the first try and it was a bugger to get it started peeling off while I was half asleep.

Didn't try the tape last night, but I'm shooting for trying tonight. Thanks for the tips

To get proper adhesion you probably should scrub your skin where you plan to apply the tape.

Facial skin is oilier than the rest of the body's skin.

Adhesion will fail when there is even an thin film between the adhesive and the surface to be bonded to.

Additionally, at the surface of our skin are dead skin cells which shed.

You might want to scrub to remove oils and dead skin cells before applying tape.

You do not need to *scrub* your skin. I wash my face in the evening per usual (no scrubbing, just use my hands) and I apply a light moisturizing lotion after. I use 3M Nexcare paper tape for sensitive skin. It holds well all night and pulls off pretty gently in the a.m.

If you have sensitive skin you could really irritate it by scrubbing it and then putting an adhesive compound up against it.

iinm, 'scrubbing' your skin will, as Kaiasgram says, irritate it, and probably make it produce *more* oil.

Ok, obviously I should also be clean shaven, do you men do that every evening? I have a heavy beard, and I've let it go over a few days.

I use 3M surgical tape with good results. I tape in an "X" pattern over the mouth and it stays all night. I heard of people using painters blue tape with good results as well.
