ResMed S9 Elite: Decent deal?

Post by GoodGuyQ » Fri Jan 02, 2015 8:42 pm

Just purchased a ResMed S9 Elite with the humidifier, extra tank (unopened) and several sealed Wisp cushions for $240. Felt like a good deal. I just ordered a AirFit P10 mask and the Wisp tubes from Amazon for $90.

I would rather have purchased an APAP, but this seemed a good deal and I imagine I can work out the numbers I need.

One question though. I grind my teeth pretty bad. Will this have any effect on CPAP usage?

wear a bite guard, it'll help keep your mouth closed too

How do you know you need a CPAP? Have you had any kind of a sleep study?

It's a good deal if you, personally, feel like you got a bargain.

Have you had a sleep study?

It appears to me to be a good deal. Especially if you are a "cpap-guy". A lot of folks prefer cpap mode (including myself) and it has it's plusses and minuses over the apap mode. Good luck!

GoodGuyQ,

I found that a straight cpap setting disturbed my sleep alot less than apap even though I still have insomnia issues which I am working on alleviating. In fact, I am finding out it might be a better option than my recommended sleep study bipap settings which is a whole other post.

Anyway, my point is that you may find you don't even miss having an apap option. Of course, everyone is different so I don't want to generalize my experience to yours.

Best of luck with your machine.

49er: I can't agree with you more. I think some folks spend time trying to make the autopap mode work when the cpap mode may be a better option for them. They both have their pluses and minuses. At the end of the day... it is a comfort thing (thang), but I suspect that some folks can treat their apnea condition by using a particular mode. My doctor prescribed the Vpap so I could get the "enhanced" EPR because my chest was sore. Once the soreness went away, I got frustrated with the machine trying to "breath" for me. I went back to the cpap mode and have since left it there. Again, my comfort level is tied to cpap and I try to point out to other members of the forum to see what mode is best for them.

By the way... are your Washington Redskins keeping RH3 (er... Bob Griffin)?

Sounds like a good deal.

CPAP usage may decrease your teeth grinding. Sleep bruxism (grinding your teeth in your sleep) has been found to be correlated with untreated sleep apnea.

Thanks all. I have tried to wear mouth guards in the past...but I gag a lot and really can't stand to sleep with something in my mouth. I tried a real small/thin one once...I went to sleep with it in and haven't seen it since. That was a few years ago.

I am not railing against politics, but since Obamacare, my insurance seems really crappy. I have BCBS CA luminos. They apparently do not pay for a sleep study. But let's say they do. I still need to meet my 3k deductible first.

My wife and exwife and bunk mates in Iraq/Afghanistan say I snore like a cartoon. They use to think I was faking because it was so loud and horrible. I also sometimes stop and then my wife gets worried and checks on me. I do wake gasping sometimes.

Also, when I just lay down to relax, half asleep I can feel my throat closing, if I lay on my side it seems ok. I can count on one hand how many times I have slept more than 4hrs in a row in recent memory. Or better yet, I can distinctly remember 3 or 4 times that I have went to sleep, woken up at least 6hrs later and felt refreshed and ready for the day.

The cpap will either help or not. If not, I can sell it to someone else. If it does help, it could change my entire life.

Definitely sounds like you need this therapy. You should be able to figure out your settings. I did it with a fixed-pressure CPAP in 2005. By the time I acquired an APAP the next year, I found out that the changing pressures disturbed my sleep. So, I only use straight pressure.

But in any case, do whatever it takes to not back sleep... it will provoke more apneas.

Thank you for your service, GoodGuyQ.
And definitely talk to the VA. That's what they are there for.

I disagree. Many CPAPers do just fine back sleeping. They may require a little more pressure, but you can probably eliminate apnea even if you back sleep.

However, not sleeping on your back may help reduce your apnea.
