Chin straps for use with Nuance nasal pillows

Post by novatom1960 » Thu Jan 01, 2015 8:55 pm

My sleep doctor gave me the Nuance nasal pillows to try for my first CPAP home testing. I'm just at the beginning stages and would like to use the Nuance and not go full fast mask but I also still think I open my mouth at night when sleeping. Will a chin strap solve this problem? And if so, can anyone recommend a chin strap for the Nuance ProGel nasal pillows?

Thank you

Chin straps can't keep your lips closed... only tape can do that, or else using a full face mask lets you mouth breathe but not lose Cpap air that way... and straps are not as effective in general.

Good news, many mouth breathe because of the apnea, and it gradually gets better.
When my yap opens too much, I use a two inch piece of one inch wide J&J cloth tape, positioned vertically
to keep my lips together, with the lip surfaces rolled inward so the tape won't hurt my kisser.

I found that a head band I got from Winco Groceries works better as a chin strap than the chin strap I got at a DME. It is comfortable to wear and does keep my mouth closed. It has a narrow part that I put on top of my head(normally this part goes under your hair) and use the wide band part under my chin.

There was a thread awhile back discussing just this device.
The creator guaranteed the product, and perhaps does now.

My DME gave me a stupid single strap that went around my head and it was useless, slipped all over the place. I tossed it and got a Ruby style adjustable chin strap https://www.cpap.com/productpage/ruby-s ... strap.html It actually has helped me pretty much keep my mouth shut during the night, I think it also serves as a subconsious reminder to not let my mouth fall open. It's also quite comfortable. I use the Airfit P10 pillows. Hopefully soon I can do without the chinstrap altogether.

Actually, they can. I had the problem of opening my mouth with nasal pillows (AirFit P10) and a chin strap completly cured it from happening again. Check out the Carefusion Ruby Red Adjustable.

actually, Julie is right. clench your jaw tight, blow out through your lips.

your teeth aren't airtight, and that's all that a chinstrap keeps closed.

I use this chinstrap:

Ruby Chin Strap - Adjustable, Extra Large TMS-09ADJ-XL

My only problem is the roughness of the inside surface of the chinstrap on my face skin. So I plan to coat the inside surface with non- toxic Teflon Spray. What do you think?

See here a one year treatment results of my including the small leaks levels, thanks to using this kind of chinstrap. I could not such good results from other chinstraps.

Avi, I think you would do better with a piece of cotton fabric.

Or, you could grow a beard...

Look for 4 way stretch fabric and spray flexable fabric adhesive... fabric store or amazon should have it.

I tuned the Ruby style chin strap inside out, it's softer that way.

What worked for me was wrapping the cheek straps a few times with cotton material and securing with fabric glue on outside of strap...

The issue of mouth air leak with the Nuance mask is the same as with all other nasal masks.

In my case, the chinstrap solves two important treatment issues:

1) Avoiding a wide mouth opening and thus causing the leak to be limited.
2) Pressing upward against my mandible and thus holding my tongue in place. Otherwise, my tongue falls into my throat when I fall asleep and this causes an obstructive apnea.

opening the lips and letting some air go thru the teeth would not affect the operation of the S9 machine in its diagnosis and response.
