Caution - another reason for a dry humidifier tank

Post by path2others » Wed Jun 21, 2006 6:42 pm

The other day I noticed I had used more water from my humidifier. I started thinking mouth breathing? large mask leaks? was the heater set too high? The problem turned out to be the design of the tank. When I cleaned the tank I did not have the plastic tank firmly attached to the metal plate. I leaked just enough hot water to stew the wood under my APAP machine on my bed side stand. I found a plastic lid to place under my machine and protect the wood. Why they had to design a tank that needs to be sealed around the bottom is beyond me. The next time you notice that the humidifier tank is dry you might want to check for a puddle on the floor.

That is so true. I have the same machine, and also the same problem. Seems like every time I take it apart to clean it leaks that night. Now I don't clean it as often as I should

I used to get regular leaks until I put a small cookie sheet under my unit to catch leaks. Now I never get leaks

They also crack the plastic, my solution, "Never take it apart", if you use distilled water it won't get cruddy, and you can empty it from the top. Jim

I had tried not taking it apart, but one day i saw red stuff growing in the humidifier. I was using vinegar to clean it out.

I had the same problem. I applied silicone grease ( just a thin film) to the rim of the humidifier bottom plate where it contacts the plastic case.
I haven't had a leak since. I used to take it apart everyday. Now I just rinse it in warm soapy water. About every 7 days I take it apart and clean it.
