National Geographic "Sleepless in America"

Post by SGearhart » Sun Nov 30, 2014 5:27 pm

The National Graphic Channel will have a 2 hour special supposedly about sleep disorders. The name is "Sleepless in America" and will air on Sunday, November 30th. The times are 8 P.M. Eastern and Pacific, 7 P.M. Central. I guess Mountain time doesn't count.

Well that should be interesting to see what mainstream media gets right and what it gets wrong. Thanks for the head-up.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

How ironic is it hat I'm watching a show about sleep deprivation trying to keep myself awake because I want to spend as little amount of time in my horrible bed as I can

Indeed it is. No discussion of sleep apnea in either broadcast. How was it? For anyone that did watch?

These were two different broadcasts?

I was expecting more from the Chiefs.

I was disappointed with the broadcast. They had one little segment about Schneider Trucking requiring any driver with a BMI greater than 31 to take a sleep study. They then showed on trucker using his CPAP. That whole segment lasted for about 2 minutes out of 120 minutes. I should have watched it while I was in bed. I was fighting off sleep the whole time I was watching it. That lasted until I went to bed. . . then I was wide awake!

I watched a good bit of it, but it was pretty late last night. They are going to rebroadcast it. Next Airing: SUN DEC 7 9AM ET according to the National Geographic site. I thought there was some very good information about Cancer and Alzheimer's and sleep deprivation. I plan to watch the whole show on Dec 7.

It was on from 6:00 - 8:00 PM here in the Mountain Time Zone.
I watched virtually all of it. I was somewhat disappointed in that (as is typical) the "doctors" seemed to reinforce the old stereotype that it's the "fat" people who get Obstructive Sleep Apnea. (and they showed lots of them on the show)
No mention of Sleep Apnea CAUSING weight gain.
No mention, that I could decipher, about Central or Mixed Apneas.
Some mention of folks who don't stick with the therapy and some reasons why. They stated about 50%.
Lots of it was stuff that's been discussed here many times and in various ways.
Lots of focus on drivers of vehicles of various sizes and driving drowsy being the cause of many accidents.

I hope it got the attention of SOME of the people who need to get diagnosed.

I had mixed emotions watching it. Some things were kind of interesting and some things didn't receive enough attention.

My thoughts: too long on explaining why sleep is important, not long enough on sleep issues (in each segment), disappointed in the "only overweight people get apnea" and the way they came to the determination of this was a study of truckers and other shift type workers, not enough sampling from a cross representation of people, did not really explain how the cpap works to help just more lose weight advice. Oh well :/
