P10 Nasal Pillows ---- exhalation more difficult

Post by Physician » Thu Nov 13, 2014 11:30 pm

Tried the P10 pillows again, and the straps were too tight. But the main problem was that exhalation was restricted compared to the Mirage FX nasal mask.

Have any of you felt this same phenomenon ?

Noticed the tight straps when I tried it in my sleep test last month. Not sure how to deal with that.

I like the venting, and that is quieter than the FX, so maybe will not wake me as often. Better strap comfort, lower weight/mass.

They put it on the script; getting it soon.

The FX has 3 sizes, (4, actually) and I found the smaller one too restrictive for exhalation. Probably on the medium P10 during the SS.

Does the P10 have varying sizes, and which size are you having issues with?

Good point. I only tried the three smallest sizes. Have you tried the Mirage FX and compared and contrasted ?

Yes, exhalation is definitely more restricted in my case also with the AirFit P10.

I haven't noticed airflow being restricted with the P10 - I have noticed that I don't hear it as loudly! Are you sure you are using the right size? Some people have talked about needing larger pillows for the P10 than they do for other masks. You can make the straps looser by stretching the two pieces further apart - loosest for me is to have the top one near my forehead and the bottom one near the base of my skull. Eventually they stretched and were fine when worn with the straps closer together - but the P10 did make my nose a bit sore during the first week or so.

Nick D is right - it is easy to use too small a pillow which gets wedged in the nostril and constricts flow. Try a bigger pillow and try to practice deep nose breathing once lying down.

With a pressure of 9, there is low turbulence in your nostrils. If the pressure is >12, the airflow intranasally can be annoyingly loud.

The P10 straps are far easier to adjust than the other masks I've tried. If they're too tight, stretch them out a bit or play with the distance separating the two rear straps. And yes, general consensus is that the P10 pillows run a bit small, so you may find that the next size up works better for you.

Not sure they are smaller than other pillows or if they fit in a different way - more on the "outside" of the nostril. They are also wedge shaped so they "open" the nares too.

It appears that people when using a new mask to them never read the instruction manual. Or for that matter watch a you tube video on that mask. They both tell you how to adjust the headgear for the best fit and to try other pillow sizes for best performance. Just my opinion but use some common sense people.
