Season for Humidifier Questions
Season for Humidifier Questions
With ambient temps dropping, seems like some of us new to CPAP are having some problems with excessive moisture. I'm one of those people that has a nose that likes plenty of humidity. Setting the PR System One humidity control to the automatic setting didn't provide enough so I reverted back to the Classic setting which bypasses the onboard sensor and delivers more moisture.
The obvious next problem was rainout. A hose cozy didn't make much difference but pulling as much of the hose under the covers with me seems to be helping. Unfortunately, I keep tugging on the hose when changing positions and fear the blower unit will end up on the floor. So I'm exploring options.
The model 560 has the option of a heated hose humidifier. It costs more and that's why the DME didn't spring for it initially. I'm willing to pay for the retrofit if it solves my current moisture control problem.
Does anyone have experience with both humidifiers sold with the model 560 blower? Will the optional heated hose humidifier deliver more moisture than the non-heated hose model humidifier? In other words, is the humidity setting at 5 (max) on the current unit produce less than the 90% humidity rating of the heated hose model?

Can't comment on your machine's humidifier, but I would suggest you get a longer hose - they're available from most dealers and are cheap.
Re: Season for Humidifier Questions
Not sure how a longer hose would solve the rainout issue?

there's only one humidifier, but there are two lids. the 'stock' one and the 'costs extra' one that comes with the hose and a bigger power supply for 75$Crainnut wrote: Does anyone have experience with both humidifiers sold with the model 560 blower? Re: Season for Humidifier Questions
Put some old thick mouse pads under your machine to keep it from being pulled off the night stand.
Route your hose under the covers and next to your body to add warmth. Hose cozies will help, too.
You may have to adjust your HH setting down a bit.

prolly better to put the machine on the floor and let the water drain back in.... unless the hose cozy fixes it.Wulfman... wrote:Put some old thick mouse pads under your machine to keep it from being pulled off the night stand.

Re: Season for Humidifier Questions
I originally had a 550 without heated hose and a hose cover. Am now using a 560 with heated hose and without a hose cover. The 560 can generate air that is humid to the point of being oppressive during summer months. That same level of humidity is welcome now. My anecdata is that the 560/heated hose provide more humidity than the 550.

Good idea. I'll try that but my real problem is rainout.Wulfman... wrote:Put some old thick mouse pads under your machine to keep it from being pulled off the night stand.
Read my post. I already do this.Wulfman... wrote:Route your hose under the covers and next to your body to add warmth. Hose cozies will help, too.
Therein lies the problem. Too high and it's like snorkeling in Hawaii. The next setting lower and the right nostril closes down. That's why I think what is needed is the heated hose.Wulfman... wrote:You may have to adjust your HH setting down a bit.
Where does one find the 'costs extra' lid kit? I scoured our host's site and came up empty.palerider wrote:there's only one humidifier, but there are two lids. the 'stock' one and the 'costs extra' one that comes with the hose and a bigger power supply for 75$

Re: Season for Humidifier Questions
I predict you will really like that heated hose.
I also had to revert to Classic mode too keep my nose happy with the moisture. Plus another annoyance was with the non heated hose and the new humidification system (not Classic Mode) in the winter and my cold bedroom even at a setting of 5 I was having really bad ice cube nose. Woke me up way too many times with the cold nose.
When I got the upgrade kit so I could have the heated hose plus my 90% humidity I was in heaven. Probably the best money I ever spent.
In the winter my bedroom gets down right cold. I turn the thermostat down to 50 when I go to bed and the bedroom is at least that cold if not coler because it's a drafty old farmhouse with minimal insulation and crappy single pane windows facing north. The heated hose works wonderfully even in my cold bedroom. No rain out.
It's easy to swap out the lids and plug that tiny electric in.

Thanks Pugsy. I had a really good reply going and pushed the wrong button and poof, gone.Pugsy wrote:I predict you will really like that heated hose.

I took the lid of my current humidifier off this morning just to see how difficult the retrofit might be and you are right, it really should be an easy task. The only tricky part was removing the lid without putting too much stress on the plastic tabs that hold the lid slightly open when you remove and replace the water reservoir. I found if you stick your index finger in and help ease the tabs around the stops built into the case, it comes off easily without much strain on the plastic parts.
If you just force the lid open I think there is a chance you could break something.
Can't wait for the retrofit kit to arrive. Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions.
