CPAP in somewhat cool room

Post by TracyIA » Wed Nov 05, 2014 12:30 am

I've had my CPAP machine for just over 6 months. Today I took it to my DME, because I've been having issues with the air being too cold (and too damp) by the time it gets to my nose, and they asked me to bring it in when I complained. I've tried curling the hose under my pillow to keep it from getting too cold, and that helped a bit, but was also a bit annoying. For the last few days, I've kept the hose under the covers against me, and the air is warm when it gets to me, and I'm not getting dripped on. However, I wake up in the morning with the hose wrapped around my waist, and sleeping on the hose isn't the most comfortable thing I've ever done. Just for comparison, my cold room is 68 degrees F, not actually dramatically cold. How warm do you keep your room when you're using your machines?

The DME initially wanted me to raise the humidity level. I've experimented with humidity levels, if I have my humidity over 3, I wake up in the morning feeling like I have a sinus cold that lasts about 3 days, and I rip the headgear off while I'm sleeping, often several times. So instead, they wanted me to try "classic" mode humidity(?). When checking out my machine today, they hooked it up to a diagnostics tool, and discovered it needed to be sent back, so today I have a new (same model) machine to try first in 'normal' mode. While I was talking to them today, they told me that they don't sell heated hoses or the heated hose machines, and if I needed that I'd need a whole new machine. I thought my machine would just need a new humidifier, but I'm a little unsure about the machine capabilities. Mine is a Remstar Auto 560p, which is what I think I chose in my profile. Anyway, I'm supposed to try the new machine, and see if it's better.

I tried it for a little while already tonight, and it doesn't seem to be better. I'm pretty sure I'm going to put the hose back under the covers next to me to keep it warm. They still want me to try classic mode next, and if that doesn't help, they've let me know they can order a wrap around the hose to keep it warm. They said they thought I'd need to convince my doctor I needed a heated hose, to get a prescription for it. Is this pretty normal?

My pressure is 11cm. I use Sleepyhead software to see how things are going. I'm trying to learn what I'm doing by reading forums. I'd welcome advice. Thanks!

I'm guessing a lot of the folks here are fast asleep right now but you'll probably get some feedback on the humidifier and heated hose questions in the morning. There are any number of places you can order a hose cover, and I think some are even on our host site cpap.com. In the meantime, you can make one out of whatever you have around the house. One time I cut the toe out of a few old tube socks and slid them over the hose when I was testing to see if a hose cover might help. Just use any lightweight but warm material. Just be careful to not stress the hose with mispositioned tape or ties etc. (spoken by someone whose twist tie slipped off the material and rubbed the hose. )

Your machine has the capability to use a heated hose which will help. Adding a hose wrap will also help. The you can use a hose hanger to keep the hose out of your way at night without having the cooling problem of the hose just out in the air.

Hose hangers and wraps are available through our host as well as other sources such as Amazon. I purchased some fleece fabric at the fabric store and wrapped the hose using Velcro wraps to secure it if you want to go the do-it-yourself route.

You don't need a whole new humidifier at all. Just a little kit to convert your non heated hose machine to a heated hose machine.

1..new lid for humidifier that has the electric connection for hose
2..new heated hose
3..new power supply because your old power supply is 60 watt and you need 80 to power the heated hose.

It's a little upgrade kit. Easy to do yourself. I did it to my 60 series machine.
Your DME could get this for you if they just would.

KISS. Start with a hose cover - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/snuggl ... cover.html.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try a heated hose.

If you like the hose under your covers, you can clip the hose somewhere on your pj's to keep it in place. I do this and it never tugs on my mask or the machine and I don't roll over on it.

My bedroom is between about 60 - 65 degrees and I don't use heated humidity.......just "passover" (year round). But, I route the hose under the covers and next to me. Works for me. I never liked the heated humidity.
Don't really have any "problems" with the hose getting wrapped around me. I use a standard 6' hose and my night stand and machine is very close to the bed so there's not much hose exposed to the cool air.

I am learning that a lot of the regulars on here have a "specialty". This is Wulfman's - telling people that they may not need a heated humidity.

If your DME told you that you'd need a whole new machine to get heated humidity, tell them they're either dead wrong, or they're pulling your leg and you're not buying into their scheme, whatever it is. Go to https://www.cpap.com and find the upgrade kit Pugsy mentioned, then print it out and take it with you to show them. That online site does not work with insurances, so if you want coverage ask your DME to provide what you've just proven is available. Or, if your insurance allows for refunds on covered equipment you could get it yourself online, but call your insurance carrier and find out what their policy is. I have the same machine you have, and was given the heated hose since it was part of my prescription. Which brings me to another point: ask your doctor to prescribe a heated hose... if it's written there they have to provide it.

Many of us have developed ways to "Cope With XPAP". I go one step farther, 60 degree bedroom, no water in the HH ever. Turn off thd bedroom heat in the winter, on nights too warm, I run the window a/c, even in the winter.

Just because many of us have found a way that works for us, doesn't make us bad, maybe it makes us smart. We didn't quit or give up, we found OUR solution. Jim

Yup. When I see people post who have their HH settings cranked up to the max and then complain that they can't breathe or are congested or mouth-breathing, etc., etc., etc......."guilty". For SOME people, turning down the humidity can prove beneficial. There are quite a few on the forum who have found the benefits of "less is more".
Personally, I can breathe better outside on a cool night than I can in a hot, steamy shower.

I took the advice of less is more, well I have taken most of Wulfmans advice and am much happier with my cpap experience.
