Sucessor to the PB420E or Sandman?

Post by pj2448 » Tue Nov 04, 2014 10:44 pm

Anyone who was on auto more than 10 years ago might know this - certainly the new auto machines from Resmed and Respironics are good, but wondering if anyone knows if the Puritan Bennett 420E GoodKnight series and/or the Sandman APAP's have been re-made into another brand since being discontinued? I really did well with that algorhythm but my 420E got damaged by water and isn't working anymore

Discontinued as far as I know. I don't even recall hearing of any on the used market either. You might do some Google searching and see if anything shows up, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I never tried one, but there were lots of folks on the forum who had them and liked them. Unfortunately, like everything, they eventually wear out or things break.

How long ago did yours get water in it? Did you empty it out and dry it out after that? That was a common problem years ago with many of the machines and their HH tanks. Some people were able to drain the water out and get them good and dry before restarting them.......but others weren't so lucky.

The company was sold to a French company and now they produce Dreamstar series. I previously used the goodknight bilevel I now use the dreamstar bipap & it is the same as the goodknight series. I don't think they are sold in the US, but you can check.

Thank you gulfpearl! I may end up buying this from Europe if I can.

Have you tried one of the newer APAP's and had trouble with it? Even if there is a "successor" to the 240E, it probably won't have the same algorithm anyway.

The PRS1, S9, and A10 machines are pretty good.

Sorry for not getting back to this sooner. I've been on PAP for almost 20 years - mostly on APAP. Started off with a Remstar CPAP in 1995 - loud - and had to adjust with a momometer and screw driver. Good for a while then needed something more. Then on a Respironics Virtuoso - not a very good auto. Awful really. Got a Resmed Spirit - ok but generally over treated with too much pressure. Then got my 420E which is the best I ever owned. Was curious later though and got a Remstar Auto. Good for a while but really not perfect treatment. Then got a Devilbiss Intellipap, still working on that one to get the settings dialed in. Most recent addition to the collection is my Resmed S9. The S9 is very good but still over treats my events like the spirit did. Too much gas in the morning for the exact same pressure range as others. So, just accidently pulled the 420E off the night stand and it filled with water. Took the dust cover off and the inner foam air duct had pretty much disintegrated inside from the water. Really no chance to repair. The machine still powers and works but can't be breathing in that stuff now. Plus the blower is very noisy now. So, may try to get a dreamstar, if I can.
