Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
I have asked before but can't find it. I am having severe sneezing and runny nose. Used humidifier on cpap at lowest setting and had bad 'rain'. Turned off the humidifier and felt burning sensation in sinuses. Now sneezing constantly. It has been about 5 hours since I awoke. Please help!

What is your humidifier set at? Is the PAP level with or lower than your mattress? Could you have a cold virus? Do you have saline spray or rinse? Lots of variables here, we'll need more info...

Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
Go to the store and get something like Simply Saline nasal spray and use it a LOT today and tonight and probably tomorrow as well.
Turn your humidifier back on and use some moisture...your nasal mucosa are dried up and mad at you for drying them out.
If you get rain out...condensation in the mask or hose... there are ways to deal with it. While rain out is annoying...it doesn't cause the misery that dried out nasal mucosa cause. I have done what you did...and it took 3 days for my nasal mucosa to forgive me.
Are you still using the M series machine?
Are you just now having the rain out issues now that the weather has turned colder?
What was your setting on the humidifier when you had rain out?
Was that rain out in the mask? The hose? or both?

Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
RicaLynn, In my original post I stated that my cpap humidifier is on the lowest setting...I do not have a virus/cold.
Pugsy, I had put my cpap on the floor next to bed as advised on this forum thinking that would take care of the 'rain' problem, and also put the tube under the covers. The 'rain' was really bad anyway. I do use the Ayr saline spray but it does nothing for the sneezing.

Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
Use lots and lots of the Ayr...take some decongestants like you would if you had a cold if you can. Treat the symptoms like a bad allergy attack or a cold because that's how the nasal mucosa and sinuses are acting but it from getting dried out and I hope the symptoms don't stay with you like they did with me. Hot steamy shower..all the usual home remedies to help the nose out.
Your bedroom must be on the cool side now. Have you tried a hose cozy to help warm up the hose?
Is the rain out in the hose or just the mask? Important to know because the remedies are different.

Remove and disconnect the humidifier... don't use it. I haven't used mine in years.

No...it will make things worse for this person. She already turned it off and now is paying horrible sinus/nose issue price.Sheriff Buford wrote:Remove and disconnect the humidifier... don't use it. I haven't used mine in years.

She was fine with the humidity until rain out happened.
Trust me...not all people can do what you do and have any quality of life. I have been through what she is going through due to turning off the humidifier. It's not pretty ...it's miserable and it doesn't go away immediately.

Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
Thanks Pugsy. My husband doesn't ever use humidifier and never has problems but I have to use it I put the hose under the covers instead of using a cozy on it. Used cozy a long time ago but guess I need to order another even tho I did have rain even using it. I use a variety of masks, not decided which I like best yet but mostly use the full face mask I changed profile to reflect just now. I am using Oct mess for allergy with no success. I have rls which means no benadryll as that aggravates the rls. Have not yet had the wonderful nights sleep people claim when using cpap. Not sure if rain was in hose or just mask but know it was in mask as splattered all over me as took mask off last night. What is recommendation if it is just mask?

I was going to suggest that, but I see you've already tried it.gsbuck wrote:Thanks Pugsy. Does your husband have an identical machine? Is there an extra HH available that you could try?
I'm wondering if your HH has "issues" and switching some components might point to a problem with the one you've been using.

Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
Didn't read the whole thread so don't know what the general consensus is, however in my personal experience, my sinus issues went away with more heat and more humidity, mostly due to my using the 'classic mode' humidifier settings on my PR S1 humidifier.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
My husband has a cpap that is quite a few years old. He refuses to see a sleep Dr and have a new cpap machine. I have wondered if there might be something wrong with my machine but have been hesitant to call the rep about it. Maybe I should call her?
Sirnoddinoff, I am afraid to set the humidity higher as it was so bad at 1.

Is your husband's machine the same as yours, i.e. a ResMed M series? Maybe you can switch humidifiers with his machines and see if something is wrong. I'm puzzled over getting rainout with a setting of 1.gsbuck wrote:Thanks Pugsy. What is "Oct mess"?
Are you using any nasal sprays like Afrin? Have you tried nasacort?
You might try Neilmed Sinus Rinse.
