Caffeine

Post by Day_Dreamer » Tue Oct 14, 2014 2:21 pm

I understand caffeine can affect sleep

How does it affect it

I have no problem getting to sleep

I am always within +- 15 minutes of my normal time

Staying asleep can be problematic as I always wake after 3-4 hours blow my noose, void my bladder and return to sleep with in 5-7 minutes (only once a night). Once every few weeks to a month, I need to read or meditate to get back to sleep (I am up maybe 45 minutes)

Can caffeine be a contributing factor to the wake ups if getting to sleep is not an issue?

Thanks in advance

It depends. If you are ingesting caffeine after the lunch hour, there is a possibility that it can affect your sleep pattern, even if you fall asleep readily. What kind of caffeine (coffee? Soda? Chocolate? Pills?) and quantity can also affect your sleep.

BTW

There is a concentrated caffeine powder that is being marketed. 1 tablespoon equals an insane amount (like 10 cups)
I won't be trying that....

Good to hear!

Try cutting off ANY caffeine after 2pm and see how you do.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Get rid of the noose. That tends to make your apnea worse.

I think caffeine is a trial and error thing. It affects people differently.

I always try to do a "drying out cure" from caffeine every so often. I'll stop it completely for a few weeks. I usually fall off the wagon later, but I find the caffeine works better with less afterwards, and it seems to help my health in general.

Regarding 'drying out': I also tend to experiment with 'off and on' caffeine every so often. I can't say I've noticed a big difference in my sleep habits while using caffeine or not using it... unless I go thru a phase where I really overdo my coffee intake. Then it hits me fast and hard sleep-wise. Right now I'm down to one morning 12oz cup of half reg and half decaf spread out over 1.5 hours (reheating it, of course, also whole bean ground fresh). That amount seems to be a good balance for me at this point in time. Too much caffeine makes me pee too much at night... wonder what's up with that?

My latest coffee shock: I just had a 10oz Americano decaf yesterday at a kiosk called Equator's... $3. That almost kept me up last night!

even before being diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, I never drank coffee after 11AM....

If I had any caffeine after 11AM, it would keep me awake all night.

Caffeine? Interesting topic.

Got to admit, I do love coffee and tea. I drink 4 to 5 cups per day.

So long as I don't do caffeinated beverages after 4 or so in the afternoon, I'm usually okay for the sleeping that evening (with an occasional wakeful surprise).

Caffeine is an alkaloid, and we (many of us, anyway) can develop a tolerance to many alkaloid substances. (Those of you who are smokers will know this, as nicotine, also an alkaloid, probably had much more of a physiological kick when you first started the habit.)

I cut off caffeine completely as I was ravaged with insomnia. If someone has even a little sleep disturbance it's the first thing that should be cut out.

I would think that it would only inhibit getting to sleep. Which is not my problem. I can have two cups after diner and get to sleep with no problem. Its staying sleep that is my issue

Not the way it works for me. Any caffeine at all and my AHI doubles. Some folks only report difficulties getting to sleep, others have their sleep disturbed. Its a very personal thing.

Food journal is the only way to discover how it and other foods affect you.

I'm sorry I don't have a reference for you, but it is my opinion based on my experience and what I've read that caffeine could indeed be contributing to wake ups, even if it doesn't affect getting to sleep. Why not try giving up those two cups after dinner and see what happens?
