Snoring

Post by Ranger16 » Mon Jan 24, 2005 8:33 pm

I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, I went to the doctor because of my bad snoring. So off to the sleep clinic I go, result, severe sleep apnea, back again to use a cpap machine. Results, big improvment, even though I slept like crap. My question is, since I'm a smoker, does this cause me to snore. My girlfriend says it does, because I had quit at one time. Anybody have any suggestions, I am supposed to get a cpap machine at home for a month trial. Thanks

Ranger,
No it shouldn't cause you to snore if it is working properly. Understand your mouth must be closed. The pressure keeps your airway open so you shouldnt snore if the presssure is correctly set.

Ranger,

You'll find the machine alleviates a lot of the snoring. It used to sound like two badgers fighting in my room when I slept. My first night on the machine all but eliminated the racket. I only snored as my machine ramped up to the correct pressure. I'm a smoker that will start quitting in tomorrow (honestly!).

You slept like crap at the sleep center for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was they were trying to find the correct pressure setting for your machine. I used my machine for the first time last night, with the correct setting for me and I feel a little more coherent than normal. I didn't get the energy jolt that some report, but I'll take what I got for now. Unfortunately, I didn't move that much in my sleep and my legs and back are really cramped.

I think your girlfriend would just like to see you quit smoking - and there's nothing wrong with that.

Best of luck to you.

I don't know how they expect ANYONE to get a good night's sleep at the sleep lab with 37 freakin' wires hanging from every part of your body and a cpap mask on for the first time! I don't know how they can get any accuracy of a person's true sleep habits under those conditions!

Bozmon,

I questioned the accuracy of the results from the second study for that same reason.
