Another doctor question

Post by bwexler » Sun Sep 07, 2014 3:24 pm

It's been almost a year since my new ASV machine. So I asked my PCP to set up an authorization to see a sleep specialist to help me fine tune things so I don't still need an afternoon nap.
Got the authorization. Called for an appointment. Asked them what to bring. Photo ID and insurance card.
Asked if I should bring my machine or data card. Why?
Asked if they could read the info from the data card. Huh. Let me ask the doc. NO!
Asked if I should bring reports. How many pages would that be?

Is there any reason I should see this sleep specialist?

Off to my nap now.

Any guesses or conjecture he could conjure up based on no information are not worth your co-pay. Find a REAL doctor.

I think you knew the answer before you asked the question.
But, thanks for the levity today.

Don't forget to cancel the appointment so you don't get a missed appointment fee.

I kept the appointment and brought a fist full of Encode reports.
He surprised me. He could actually read and understand them. Not a bad guy. The jury is still out as to weather he will provide any benefit.
It was made clear he was the gate keeper before I could see any other sleep specialist.

I've been to three "sleep doctors" who are pulminologists. Have I gone to the wrong doctor?
First one you tells me I need a study $$ then tells me get a cpap $$, hated him, didn't get one.
Second doctor, you need a study, get a cpap. Heard that before. Their dme rep called me dozens of times and is always lurking in his office. $$$ I went to a different DME. Hated the machine and the mask, the dme provider and the doctor. It was all so mechanical. No one really listened to my sleep issues (insomnia) or cared I was sleeping less and worse with the cpap. Now I think the settings may have been wrong.
I realize I need help and go to Doc #3, I don't need another study. Yes! Also tells me if needed, now there is equipment for me to do the study in my own home. That's really great. I am feeling positive and will really try this time, love the Resmed, love the new mask. Have low AHI usually less than 1.0.
BUT, I am still exhausted, don't feel any different, maybe even more tired. I can fall asleep while typing this post (no longer have insomnia, quite the opposite). No one listens to how tired I am.
I realize apnea is about breathing, but pulminologists have a limited scope. Studies and cpaps are automated - where is the human touch. Surely not the technician who programmed my cpap wrong.
No one asks if I have allergies and get congested or may have reaction to the mask materials.
DME provider tries to force rental on me, refuses to tell me the cost until I pick it up, does not offer a choice of cpap -just had one ready for me to pick up.
I realize its my responsibility to learn as much as I can on my own and this forum is great. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to help others
