cpap use in Italy will extension cord work?

I will be in Italy at the end of the month and I know my apap will work on European current, but I plan on bringing an extension cord in case the wall socket is far from the bed. Would an extension cord from the US between the apap and the wall socket work?

the cord will work OK ... but you will need a adapter plug to fit the Italian outlets

This is the power strip I took traveling with me... A universal power strip (approximately 30$). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036ZE6V0/re ... svb1JRH1EF 1 cord goes everywhere without having to worry about it. This gives me multiple 110 volt American plugs for my 110-240v electronics. I need one adapter to plug into the wall. Just be careful that the device is 110/220.

Sorry for any misunderstanding but in Europe all power going through the device is 240 volt. If you have a 120/240 device with an American plug it will work without additional plug adapters. If you plug something that is 120 only you will fry the device. You only have to carry the one plug adapter for the power strip itself.

Most hotels will accommodate US type of plugs and have a 110V outlet somewhere in the room ( mostly in bathrooms ). If you plan to stay in a hotel the easier thing to do is to ask the concierge or the room service to provide you with an extension cord for your machine during your stay.

If instead you plan to stay with friends in private houses I suggest you buy an extension cord here in Italy after you arrive. Extension cords are available in any supermarket or Chinese store or electronic store and you have couple of them in every block in every city so you don't have to aggravate yourself with the extra weight of an extension cord that may not fit the plugs being used here in Italy.

In any case weather you plan to carry one or purchase an extension cord locally my advice to you is to keep in your luggage a couple of those sets suggested by greygost4
They always come handy when you try to fit different shapes plugs in corresponding holes.

You could use a plug converter at the end of the extension cord, since most CPAPs can handle 240 Volts. But I would be concerned about running 240 Volts through a US extension cord, which is only designed for 110 volts. I would suggest buying an extension cord in Italy.

it really shouldn't be an issue. iirc the insulation standards are usually spec'd to 600v, but ... if you buy one in italy, you don't have to carry it back and forth on the plane

I used the same power strip from Amazon.com (240V) as the other person above. Worked fine for me in Europe. I thought the posting was misleading though. There are no US 110v outlets on that power strip, they're all 240V in Europe. You can plug in a US appliance (like a cpap) if it operates on 240V. That's the "universal" part, that it accepts US plugs, but the appliances attached to those plugs must be rated for 240VAC. There's printing (maybe very small and hard to read) on every appliance which tells you what AC voltages it will operate with. You just have to check each one, and make sure that it will take 240VAC, and then you can use it with that universal power strip. That power strip also takes various other plugs, like the UK one, and European ones as well. I didn't find it that heavy to carry, but I have a suitcase with wheels.

I'd definitely recommend the "Universal" power strip from Amazon, it works well. All my phone and tablet chargers were plugged into it, as well as my cpap. I also took various other adapters, but the only one that I had to use was the UK one to plug the European plug from the power strip into the wall in the UK *smile*.

Kind of confusing, but once you get it straight, you're good *smile*.

Between the length of the power cord on the power supply and the length of the hose, I've never had a problem getting the hose to the bed. Worst case, I can run my laptop, cell phone charger, and CPAP machine out of one outlet.

European electricity runs on 50 cycles per minute, not 60 like in the US. This causes things like clocks to run 10 minutes slow per hour if they cannot accommodate the change in cycles even when a outlet converter is used. Not sure how this would affect a cpap machine, but thought it is something to look at and be aware of.

it wouldn't. the power bricks convert whatever they're fed into DC.

And if you were traveling with someone else, you'd have double the chargers to accommodate, which is what we have. That's why a power strip is needed, rather than just a single 3-way outlet. Also gives you whatever surge protection that the power strip provides, which isn't a bad thing, especially with an expensive cpap that needs to last the whole trip *smile*.

I don't travel much like I used to, but when I did, I always brought an extension cord the had a 6 plug strip on the end. Never knew if there would be an outlet that I could use nearby and never enough plugs even if there was.

Always took my spare machine, which is already packed with everything I needed including hose, mask, thumb drive with software on it, 3 days extra meds, etc..

Never checked the cpap and if it were a planned trip ahead of time, I would ship my suitcase, clothes etc ahead to the hotel and not even bother taking them on the flight. Always got there before I did, always delivered to the right place, and left me with just the cpap to deal with on the flight. No baggage claim...

Thank you to those helped with the question of extension cords in Italy. I did get the universal cord that was mentioned, and with my apap being 110-240 volt I should be okay.
