Best way to eliminate the new plastic stink?

Post by distantdreamer » Wed Mar 25, 2015 1:47 am

I just got my new AirSense for Her with the P10 mask today. I have a super sniffer for smells and certain smells really bother me, some even triggering headaches. The new mask smells like new plastic, does anyone have a good way to eliminate that smell quickly? Or am I just going to have to deal with it until the newness wears off.

Cleaning it before first use can really help, and also letting it air out for several days before first use.

Thanks. I did rinse it but may have to get some soap involved. Letting it sit out would mean having to use the old machine as this new hose doesn't fit my old mask. Oh well, hopefully some warm water and soap helps. Thanks!

I've just got my new AirSense for Her which I'm using with an old mask. The smell is in the machine and had gone by the third night.
The name really bugs me as I'm a Him, but I prefer the extra options.

Mitigate the smell with something good-smelling, like a freshly opened candle [unlit].

I used a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball next to the air intake of my machine... that way the only thing I could smell was the essential oil. If you don't have essential oil, then maybe a tiny squirt of body spray or something like that on a cotton ball might work the same way.

Once the mask is dry, you could also try sealing it during the day in a large ziplock bag with a bunch of baking soda.

That is a great idea! I like the idea of placing something nice smelling nearby as well. Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I sucked it up and got through the evening and it wasnt too bad like I worried it may be. I did wash them this morning with soap and left them to dry so hopefully tonight they smell better The DME did give me 5 additional pillows when I picked up my machine yesterday. I will make sure when I decide to change them out that I let the new ones sit out for a few days before use.

Pretty much any hose fits any mask. You probably disconnected your hose wrong the last time and the coupler from the old mask is on your old hose. What type of mask was your old mask?

Run the machine for a few minutes before you put on the mask.

Disassemble the mask and clean it thoroughly in very hot water. ResMed says not to put it in the dishwasher, but I wash my masks that way all the time. No dishes, normal dishwashing powder, the hottest water you can get, extra rinse, no heated dry. Maybe run it through a second time with no dishwashing powder. Don't wash the headgear or any foam parts that way.
